chewy
Normally I assumed batting teams always go for heavy Roller before batting to flatten pitch but on Day 2 of current 1st Test SA v India, India went with light Roller? can someone explain why? velu 1 Link to comment
Trichromatic
I think they didn't extra bounce. Kohli might have thought that bounce will be bit difficult to handle after his dismissal, not realizing that not everyone plays those useless pokes like him. SA on the other hand have opted for heavy roller. Pitch has already been easing out bit. SA would look to improve their performance in 2nd inning. India needed to survive till morning session to take any advantage of conditions in 2nd and 3rd session, but we lost 3 in 10 overs yesterday only and had nothing left later on. Pujara, Rohit, Bhuvi and Pandya showed what others needed to do. Link to comment
Forever Indian
It's because Kohli is clueless as ever. SA have taken the heavy roller as they ought to, to calm the pitch. Link to comment
Trichromatic
Kohli has opted for heavy roller this time. Link to comment

chewy
Not sure which rollers India used this match, but SA again used heavy roller on 4th day and pitch has calmed down feels like India missed a trick first two Tests Link to comment
Tattieboy
There is not any scientific theory about heavy or light , it's all up to the captain and what his theory on rollers is. Usually on a dry cracked wicket you wouldnt take the chance of a heavy roller incase you disturbed the cracks more and use a light to even out ball marks etc . Captain's also feel generally that on second morning they may bring any moisture upto the surface which might still be underneath . Link to comment

Forever Indian
"If a heavy roller is used on the pitch, the soil tends to get compressed making the surface rock-hard. This hardly leaves any cracks to be exploited by the spinners and it’s the pacers who feast on such wickets, owing to the consistent, zippy bounce. However, this may act as a double-edged sword by working in favour of the batting side if the majority of their batsmen are fluent in facing pacers as the ball comes onto the bat quicker and better, after having landed on a pitch as sturdy as cast cement. On the other hand, as former English cricketer, Steve James observed, using only a light roller at a stretch would present the batsmen with “a cocktail of uneven bounce and lateral movement”. James, in one of his columns for The Telegraph, summarised the seasons where heavy rollers were banished as, “Some of the cricket was dreadful. Sides were often compelled to bat first and hope they could muster 200 on a damp pitch, in the knowledge that the dent-riddled surface would be even more treacherous by the time of the fourth innings”." https://www.crictracker.com/how-heavy-and-light-rollers-impact-a-game-of-test-cricket/ It is pretty clear Kohli and team managament have been clueless as ever and making things as difficult as possible for them by using only Light Rollers. chewy 1 Link to comment
