The team atm is inconsistent but if it gets the playing 11 right, it can be a force in the WC .... I would start with a line up like the one below:

Seifert

Guptill

Williamson

Taylor

Latham

Munro

4 bowlers (Boult, Southee, Henry, Ferguson, ....)

Kneejerk.

Seifert scored 40 runs in 7 innings before this one.  He's more unreliable than Munro.

Your general point is valid though - NZ is not as bad a team as a 4-1 scoreline in the ODIs indicate.

  1. Munro
  2. Guptill
  3. Williamson
  4. Roscoe
  5. Latham
  6. Nicholls/Seifert
  7. Neesham
  8. Santner
  9. Sodhi  (Astle is a better batsman but a defensive spinner, Sodhi is a better chance to take wickets)
  10. Boult
  11. Henry
  12.

If a couple of things break in NZ's favor - openers getting a decent start, etc - NZ is a very good ODI side.  I still think they are the 3rd most likely team to make the semi-finals, behind England and India.  With South Africa right on their heels.

In big tourneys, NZ seems to do well vs Aus, Eng and Ind in SENA

Since 1992 in SENA

1992 (Aus-NZ)  - SF

1999 (Eng) - SF

2003 (SA) - S6

2015 (Aus-NZ) - F

Nope, pretty inconsistent bunch.

Eng > Ind > NZ

England is not that ahead either. They have weakness against spin and on flat tracks their batting can be lethal but their bowling is equally vulnerable.

But yes these are the top 3 teams however most open wc ever. Even Bangladesh,Afghanistan and WI can beat any team on their day.

All these 4-1 victories will go "dhare ka dhara " if nzl beat us in the WC match just like India did in 2003 .

Sau sunar ki ek lohar ki

If they beat us like they did in the recent ODI and T20,  it will even mess up our NRR

What is this peaking thing? Aus 2003 just stayed at peak throughout then?

Strong teams with highly consistent players can maintain their peak .... Teams with inconsistent and/or struggling players have to hope to touch their peak at the right time (hope because if they could plan, they would prefer to always remain at the  peak)
