Hypocrites can't stand India being in the big league.

not just America even BRITS  dont like India to rise and pose a challenge. Things would have been lot different for Ind if Shastri wasnt murdered, Bose wasnt assasinated all for Nehru puppet to come in power n start the pseudo Gandhi dynasty

Bose's assassination is a delicious conundrum for Indian patriots. On one hand, he was hands down one of the most, if not the most patriotic, educated and personally competent leader of the Indian independence movement.

On the other hand, he was as Stallinist commie as they come - ie, more on the authoritarian spectrum than anything else but also extremely pro-collectivization. Bose's plan was to have a 15-20 year 'dictatorship' with him in the helm, progressing India towards a democracy. Sounds good on paper but we know that no dictatorship has ever, on its own accord, handed over power to the masses and stepped aside. So I don't think India would've been as rosy as some think if Bose survived.

Hmm South Korea had dictatorship for few years. Their growth was amazing. Their growth was amazing. But don’t think they had communist ideology. I remember reading their economic policy was one of the best during 50s.

Erm comparing a small homogeneous country like South Korea with a gigantic multi diversified Subcontinent like India.

Yeah right.

Having authoritarian Govt in a country as humongous and diverse as India was always going to be a recipe for a disaster.

South Korea is probably the size of Punjab with a homogeneous population in contrast to India where even a small village in the distant corner of UP would exhibit more diversity.

Thus unless you had mechanisms in place to deal with the rebellions that would have sprung up every other weekend to protest against the dictatorial govt , fat chance that Bose's plan would have seen the daylight.

Democracy has failed in India. Look at the sheer amount of poverty and the ridiculous population number. Overpopulation causes so many problems and not one democratically elected government has done anything to fix this problem.

How on Earth has India added 1 billion people to its population in just 70 years? It's embarrassing.

It's a country where anything goes.

China is light years ahead, it has almost completely eradicated poverty and illiteracy, Throughout the world China is far more respected and India is still considered a poverty stricken mess. People laugh at India for having space programs when so much of the population lives in absolute squalor.

Don't give me the India has better human rights line either. Human rights in India are awful.

Democracy is for those people who have half a brain and even then it often isn't the best system.

would have provided a counter balance or a powerful voice. Sawarkar was similar to Bose on nationalism but he was rightwing on religious issues despite being a reformer within the Hindu spectrum. He faded away without much political impact.

what india needed post independence within the political environment was checks and balances. Gandhi Bose, Patel etc passing away quickly robbed them of that. Patel especially was that pole around which Nehru could have been kept in check.

Its more about the political choices the leaders at the time make. China was poorer than India under Mao (who also started the space program) but ovetook us due to reforms of Deng.

India's economic liberalization began in 1991. Maybe if that moment had come in say 1970 and the IMF would have forced our hand we would have been twice as richer per person that today.

Our neighbor Pakistan had drifted in and out of authoritarian rule. We overtook them in the early 00s.

What we can conclude is that a dictatorship works well for east asian countries. Not so much for the Africa South Asia or even the middle east (barring the oil rich countries)

Bose could have been worse than Bandit Nehru if given the chance.  Socialism was as stupid an idea then as it is now. No one with any  critical thinking could have so whole-heartily dived head-first into promoting such an idea.  The best, realistic leader at the time of independence would have been Patel, who India had a legitimate chance to get as PM had that buffoon Godse not shot Gandhi at that time. (Even if one was sympathetic to the attack, it happened at the worst possible time: it would have been less damaging if it happened much before, or even a few weeks after. This of course, is the basis of an under-discussed conspiracy theory in Indian history! :winky:)

Dictatorships and Democracies which developed and became the modern developed countries were all basically homogeneous from the get-go, or underwent forced homogenization. The diversity-homogeneity paradigm doesn't say much about what form of government works per-se. Especially considering most/all the diversity that Europe and "the West" has today is hardly a several decades old, and the Great Divergence between the western world and the rest of the world happened much before any of those countries became what is generally considered "Democracy" in the current global-vernacular: a Republic with Universal Adult Franchise.

That's a long-winded way of saying, that India is a unique country, whether we succeed in the current political scenario, or succeed in another scenario as a dictatorship, or fail, or find some other way,  there is almost no parallel to India to be found in other countries. Scale alone insures that, with China being the only nation comparable on that measure.

Indian parties are too concerned with staying in power and winning the next election. This wastes too much time and effort when it comes to development. Maybe give the winners of elections an 8-10 year term, then we can truly see what difference they make.

You should not compare India to Pakistan, their ideology is completely different, their law is based around Sharia and that will always be their downfall. If a dictatorship failed their it doesn't mean that it would have failed in India.

One government should have at least implemented a 2 child per woman policy but with democracy you can guarantee the opposition party would have simply disagreed with it just to get votes from illiterates who wanted to continue having 5+ children.

Not everyone understood family planning. Do you know china is no longer 1 child policy ? India has been doing good job in raising people out of poverty.
