zen Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) India is the birth place of many religions. However, I am not aware of a body that tries to represent all the Indian origin religions. The key religions being followed today all have a symbolic seat where the leadership and guidance comes from for e.g. Vatican City All countries are borders and people. What creates these borders and unity b/w people living within those borders is usually common culture and other practices including religion In countries such as India, religion has always had a big impact on the lives of its citizens. May be all the Indian origin religions should form a united body with aim to constantly promote best practices and upgrade traditions and rituals according to the time, while providing leadership and guidance at the global level on common religious and cultural matters. Some of the areas (in no particular order) where such a body could have impact could be: Educating on uplifting and maintaining cleanliness standards Promoting animal rights Keeping the planet first and therefore respecting the environment Securing the rights of women, kids and senior citizens Providing free education till grade 10, and creating a free basic healthcare providing system esp for kids and seniors Informing on maintaining a control over population and pollution Working towards securing and promoting the history and values of the Indian culture Religion has played a key role in shaping the society and will continue to do so. It is about how that power is harnessed and channeled for the benefits of all is the key! PS May be a place such as Dharamshala can be the seat for such a body Edited April 2, 2017 by zen chewy, tweaker and Adi_91 3
Adi_91 Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 We need to start celebrating our diversity, true. India is one of the very few countries where cultures have blended to shape our modern society. zen 1
zen Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) Ind origin religions also need to upgrade the key places of worship and set cleanliness benchmarks. Below are some of the places of worship of religions which originated in other regions: ^ Vatican City ^ Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi How the places are kept clean despite so many visitors is amazing! .... Ind needs to identify 10-12 temples that can be upgraded to such levels .... Temples are also representatives of Ind culture and can help to instill right values and ethics, along with promoting Indian art Edited April 2, 2017 by zen Adi_91 1
Muloghonto Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 That horse bolted a long time ago. Religion is declining worldwide and is a relic of the past. So not sure what 'streamlining religion' will do- more educated society becomes, more liberal it gets and less religion has influence.

Some of the areas (in no particular order) where such a body could have impact could be: As mentioned, in certain areas, religion can be more powerful than governments. There is a thread discussing the issue of child marriages in India, which happen despite laws in Ind. This is an area where the religion can be used as a tool to educate the population on the vices of such practices and bring about a change Government, Religion, etc. are all tools that are at our disposal to drive certain changes .... Each tool has its strengths and weaknesses, so depending up on the issue, the most effective tool (or a combination of tools) for that issue can be used
coffee_rules Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 (edited) Each major temple has it's own governing body. Like TTD, Shirdi, Kashi, etc, I don't think it will be wise to have some higher "private" regulatory body to regulate each one of them. And I don't think they will listen as well. We need government regulation for all the things you mention especially for building codes/cleanliness etc. A lot of major temples are kept very clean now, if you are alluding to that fact. Good to know that temples are kept relatively clean now! The body may not necessarily regulate the individual temples but serve as a representative of Ind origin religion to evaluate current practices with respect to today's times (temples do not do that), conduct welfare activities, promotion of culture and religion, handing out loans for development, protecting Ind origin religions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc.) interests, etc. All religions have some common goals to increase the welfare of the society. This is where the body can be useful, along with serving as an umbrella. The body can even certify various premises on various factors such as cleanliness. For e.g. we have Michelin star rating for restaurants https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelin_Guide that help push the restaurants to maintain certain standards Quote Michelin Guides (French: Guide Michelin [ɡid miʃ.lɛ̃]) are a series of guide books published by the French company Michelin for more than a century. The term normally refers to the annually published Michelin Red Guide, the oldest European hotel and restaurant reference guide, which awards Michelin stars for excellence to a select few establishments.[1] The acquisition or loss of a star can have dramatic effects on the success of a restaurant. Michelin also publishes a series of general guides to countries. This is an idea at the moment with its own strengths and weaknesses. Looking forward to seeing if such a concept can be developed!
Muloghonto Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 There is no united body of religion anywhere because that defeats the purpose of religions. Buddhists are not Hindus, neither are Jains or Sikhs. Nor are Sikhs Buddhist or Jains are buddhist or Sikh or whatever. If the author means that united body of religion as in a department of the government, sure. It makes sense. But it does not make sense to promote religion, when its central premise is an unscientific premise: that the universe is created and there is a God.

Most people are not taking religion as seriously as they were in the past with the one exception of Islam and this is a religion that takes advantage of other people's liberalism.
zen Posted April 4, 2017 Author Posted April 4, 2017 (edited) This is not a thread on should religion exist, which religion is better, etc .... But a thread on how to effectively represent and manage religions originating in Ind esp since these religions are a part of Ind's cultural heritage PS by 2050, it is forecasted that there would be approx. 2B Hindus and Buddhists, which are among the religions originating in Ind, highlighting the need to leverage on it to make a positive difference on many of the points in the OP Edited April 4, 2017 by zen

The last 300 years go against the last 100,000 years of human nature. Like i said, you fundoos may not like it, but we live in a different world than those illiterates that wrote those religious books. Each and every one of us knows a million times more info than mohammed or jesus or valmiki and such. Hence religion is dying and will die pretty soon.

This thread seems like an attempt to make us like China, where religion is officially managed by the state.

The idea here is to have a body representing all the Ind origin religions by agreeing on common attainable goals for the benefit of the community As for the city, I like Dharamsala, a beautiful and peaceful location. Additionally, internationally known religious personalities such as the Dalai Lama are already established there

Guru Govind Singh and Mahavira were born in Bihar, and there is already Bodh Gaya there. A new, large Mandir could be built there and then a pilgrimage track could be built between the 4 sites.
