Maybe if most in India were not fixated on SR and average of individuals and looked at firstly most important thing which  is winning the game as a team and having the ability to play the game as it is happening instead  of some old pre planned way of doing it. As a captain I didn't give a $hit who did what as long as it was done and we won. Individuals can look at there averages in their old age

Metrics are part of the evaluation of a player.  And I don't think "most of India" fixates on numbers.  There's a reason why the likes of Suresh Raina with pedestrian numbers gets a lot of love - because his contributions led to a lot of India wins.

You seem to have a lot of pre-conceived notions about "Indian fans".

Our bowling failed in this match , but the batting has been below par for a while . I don't think they realize 320 is a par score in these conditions , that's a worry cos last 2 matches neither we lost early wickets or had a batting collapse , so on a good day we manage to post a par score . Few years back we would be closing on 375 on such days .

As for bowling , I think Burmah does not suit these conditions which makes a big difference . Need Shami .

Bumrah was the most economical bowler today, better than Bhuvi, only conceded 51 in his 10.   Regardless of what type of pitch we play on, he is by a clear margin, the absolute best bowler for the death overs we have.  Its difficult for me to think of anyone else in cricket who's really better than him.

I can agree with the desire to get Shami in.  But not replacing either of Bhuvi or Bumrah.

Clearly it wasn't easy to restrict runs on this pitch and we should have made more . The reason our bowlers didn't get wicket because SL played brilliant calculated cricket having known the target.

Why are people stuck in this batting vs bowling debate, both batting and bowling were at fault yesterday, we put up a par total on board and then didn't even look like defending it at any stage of the game, but our main bowlers bumrah and bhuvi were more than decent, jadeja and pandya lost us the game with the ball and sharma, dhawan cost us 20 runs with the slow start, we need to cover both bases to beat south africa

In order of weighted factors responsible for the loss:

1.   Mendis taking Jadeja apart.   4 overs 36 runs - Finished with 6 overs 52 runs.   Jadeja is a keystone bowler for our 50 overs bowling - our team didn't have a good plan B once he was attacked.   Exposed our chink there - Having to bowl Jadav and VK for 6 overs was a desperation move, and they could have easily leaked 10 RPO against decent batting.  Its another thing that SL just calmly milked them for 6 runs an over, because they didn't need to do much more than that.

2.   Batting under-achieved.   Say what you want, believe what you want.  I am 110% convinced that if we had posted 340 on the board, we would have won with a margin of at least 60 runs or more.   320 simply didn't generate scoreboard pressure.  25 runs more would have.   And that would have been enough.

3.   Someone referred to Yadav as "Udta Umesh".   He was playing as a front-line bowler.   He was the most expensive pacer in the game.

Ultimately, it was the lack of scoreboard pressure that cost us the game.   And that was a combination of being 25 runs short, and Jadeja being surprisingly expensive.  Credit to Mendis - he completely owned Jadeja yesterday - repeatedly hitting him for boundaries over mid-wicket against the spin.  Executed some low percentage shots with authority.

Good post. To add to those points, another very important factor was lack of wickets. Look at the wicket column. Only Bhuvi picked up a wicket. Its very difficult to defend a par score on flat pitches by just containing the batsmen and without picking up wickets at regular intervals.

Hard to take wickets on a total flat track.   Wickets generally come in such chases due to mistakes induced by tight bowling and scoreboard pressure.   Credit to Mendis for preventing Jaddu from creating any pressure.  Plus, Yadav does as he usually does - mix of good and bad balls.  Pandya - we all know he's a filler bowler at this point.   Still learning.   Still, If SL had to score at even slightly higher pace, they would have had to take more risks, and wickets would have fallen.

You can't always expect everything to go your way - a reliable bowler can get attacked by top execution at times.  But our batting clearly is capable of adding more runs - what bothers me, is that they didnt even try.   Our "slog" didn't start till the 39th over.   That's simply too late, especially with only a couple of wickets down.   Against Pakistan too, it was the same method - we just got more runs in the last 5 overs against the greenbros.

And as our Kuptaan Aggressive has said, we are not "explosive" enough, to expect 15 RPO in the last 5 every time.  All the more reason to stop puttering around till the 40th over.  Start batting with intent around over 32 or so.  Sure, we will lose a few quick wickets once in a while, but so what.  Let the likes of Jadhav, Pandya, Jadeja bat 10 overs and drag us to 300.  At least take a shot for 350.

We should bring back Shami & Ashwin for the next match. There was lot of hope on Bhubaneswar to take wickets in helpful England conditions, but he was not able to take wickets.

Umesh should now raise his game when the chips are down. While bowling he looks like he is just going through the motions.

Bumrah looks out of form & is not able to bowl his trademark Yorker at will.

Pandya has still lot to learn.

Shami is such a bowler who can bowl at any stage of the match. If he is fit he should be played in the next match.

Shami should replace Umesh probably.

i think they have to get it right with SA, it will be a QF literally. Its good that SL exposed our weakness - positives : SL became strong again thanks to our bowlers live it. Tough matches like these prep teams for next phase.

India have a fair chance if Bhuvi or Umesh and Shami get their acts together as a new ball pair. And lots depends on Ashwin vs SA. outside of SL  we will probably only meet gora teams in next round if we make it.

yes 25 runs less - thanks for Dhoni

Less pressure with 320 thanks to Umesh and Jadeja.

Dhoni needs to drop down the order. One of both of Umesh/Jadeja need to make way for Shami/Ashwin next game vs SA.

looks like it from last match, Shami in for Umesh.

350 would've still been chased down. The way they were playing, we needed 380+ which we never looked like getting.

350 would have made it very tight for SL they would have attacked the part timers.

I actually did not say we should drop Bumrah , my opinion is that he may not be at his effective best in these conditions . I think SC/Aus/SA pitches suite his bowling style a lot more than Eng/NZ .

Well, if an less effective Bumrah is giving us 10 overs for 51 in games where 340 is par, I think that's good enough to play for Team India.

yup not even remotely suggesting otherwise .

if Shami is fit , he should come in for Yadav though I was hoping he will get a long run this time .

The only thing keeping Shami out is lack of match practice. Otherwise, he is the best ODI bowler in this team by a mile especially on batting pitches. Umesh has never been known to do well on patta wickets.
