bleaf27 Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 So regardless of how idiotic Kohli is , the underlying understanding of why a Coach should be the boss and not the captain correctly puts forth the argument that I had put forth myself. http://www.rediff.com/cricket/column/coach-not-captain-must-be-the-team-boss/20170703.htm My counter is that if cricket is about changing strategy from session to session, then it is even more necessary that the guy planning strategy is sitting outside the pitch, glued to the television, judging each and every delivery and then relaying a message to the captain on how to make the best out of the variables that present themselves on the ground. A captain of a sporting event is a player first and foremost. He is made the skipper of the team only after he has been inducted into the playing eleven. A captain may suddenly lose his form and his slump could affect his self-esteem. As a non-playing leader, the coach is beyond criticism for his own performance in the field as his own playing days are long gone. Khota 1
Pollack Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Both should work together in coordination. Final decisions should be on captain but he should take inputs from coach and value them. Khota and beetle 2

Ankit_sharma03 Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 A coaches job is to prepare the players and give it to the captain, which also includes helping captain off field and giving a diff perspective . It was and shud always be a captain's team- he is on the field he knws how is his players reacting and feeling. If u dnt trust the captain better change him, rather making him a puppet of the coach . Dressing room men laptop pe baith ke captaincy nahin hoti Shaz1, GoldenSun and beetle 3
maniac Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Coach has no control/decision making powers over on field plays like they have in NFL,NBA etc etc...captain has to make the call. However decisions like what combination needs to play based on pitch, opposition,Toss etc etc .should be the completely coach's domain maybe with some input from the captain express bowling 1
Pollack Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Coach should definitely have some say in team selection. No way it should be captain's team only. Besides coach should be responsible for maintaining discipline. Planning training sessions. Working on players technique. Preparing strategy with captain. But current players don't want any of these. They want to be their own boss. Train if they want and shop or have fun if they dont want to. They clearly don't want a coach rather a cheerleader. GoldenSun 1

Khota Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 I have saying this for decades. Coach should lead the team not the captain. Three sheets of paper with written instructions for captain are good enough. Look at any NFL setup. A head coach has headset on and is in continuous communication with assistant coaches and making real time decisions. No one is saying captain has no role but you need inputs from everyone and let coach has the final say. As I said before we come from land of Dronacharya and Guru is an Indian word. Kohli has way too much power. The day I saw Dhoni bowling in England that was the day I made up my mind. maniac 1

Sachin Tendulkar,Brian Lara etc were not great captains even though they were head and shoulders above everyone else in their team. Yes captain can lead by example on the field, make situational decisions but captain can't look at the data and analyze pitch and weather conditions. Obviously a captain will pick X1 players he is comfortable with but that doesn't equate the right combo...that is when an analyst looking from the outside comes in.

Point being they need not play a lot of matches in their career to suggest team combination. Some people are great analyst but not enactors. Having said that I disagree team combination should be completely coach's domain. Both captain and coach are adults and professionals. If they cannot make a decision together they are not fit to lead.

Ofcourse it doesnt make right combo, n if it happens again n agian well u have got the wrong captain Everyone makes mistake Tendulkar , lara or many gr8s might have not been gr8 captain but they lacked good support as well from coaches n board. Thats what coaches job is to support and help the team. But ultimately its a captains team. Analyst job is support the captain with data . U can have all the data all the planning on paper or computer ultimately game is played on field by 22 people and thats were captain has to control things so he shud get what he wants N as i said if we think he is making mistakes and not learning from it , well its a wrong choice of captain
