Many Bollywood films have been nominated for Oscars, won major international awards and broken box office records, below are a few that have made a lasting impact for one or a combination of reasons from subject / story, dialogues, cinematography, background score, songs, direction, acting, etc. In no particular order (may be in the order of release):

 

  • Awara
  • Shree 420
  • Naya Daur
  • Madhumati
  • Mughal-e-Azam
  • Pakeezah

Roti, Kapda aur Makan, and Sholay were the biggest hits of '74 and '75 respectively. Excellent films that can be enjoyed anytime, but today they appear more like masala entertainers than highly impactful movies relatively speaking

 

I love Manoj Kumar's Sanyasi too, which was probably the 2nd highest grossing film of 1975 .... 1975 was a great year for Bollywood as it had other major hits as well including Jai Santosi Maa, Dewaar and Dharmatma, along with critically acclaimed and successful films such as Aandhi

I recently watched Arzoo (1965) starring Rajendra Kumar, Sadhna and Feroz Khan. The film has held up well despite the time. It has the hard to describe quality that is not rarely seen in regular Bollywood films. If I have to expand my list, I would be tempted to include this one:

 

 

 

PS 1991's Saajan has shades of Arzoo

DDLJ. 

 

Everybody loves this romantic flick especially the girls.  Even foreigners see this movie and get hooked on Bollywood.

lol. too true. I can't watch even a minute long segment of hahk (pick any random portion) without the cringe face on. DDLJ, I can sit through some portions if I am drunk or high.

Many of Karan Johar and some of Yash Chopra films don't work for me anymore. "Jab tak hai jaan" made me laugh esp when SRK loses his memory :rofl: .... In fact, I sometimes wonder why I liked many of these films when they were released :dontknow:
