Stuge
Fifteen people are dead and at least 30 seriously injured in a stampede that broke out at a narrow foot over-bridge near a local train station in Mumbai after heavy rain this morning. The incident took place around 9.30 am during rush hour near a ticket window between the Lower Parel and Elphinstone stations. According to a railway spokesperson, four trains came at the same time and due to the rain, a few women commuters slipped, which triggered chaos in the surging crowd. "We are still inquiring into the exact reasons. It happened on the narrow staircase. All the injured were rushed to the nearest hospitals," said police officer Niket Kaushik. https://www.ndtv.com/mumbai-news/elphinstone-railway-station-stampede-at-overbridge-several-injured-1756677 The Dark Horse, velu and tweaker

coffee_rules
horrific scenes from Mumbai, unfortunate incident caused by city neglect. People also don't protest when authorities fail to take action, Chalta Hai attitude. A road repair, manhole not covered can take lives, but who cares, apne ko to ghar paunchna hai! Pollack
According to locals neither railway police nor authorities helped the people injured immediately though they were very near. Locals had to do all the work by themselves. velu

zen
If they expected 4 trains to be arriving at the same time, they could have prepared for it.

I would say it is out of control already considering a country like USA finds it difficult to a population of around 300M

FischerTal
^ population density is a much bigger problem. people can't find jobs in their villages or in Tier 2 cities... so they migrate to the metros to seek work.... more work needs to be done to increase job prospects in the hinterland. coffee_rules
Media/Police do it again..insult the dead, those pics with numbers on them is very insensitive to the families who have lost lives in the incident.
surajmal
You can't eat democracy. There is a reason chinese laugh at Indians... All the fecked up laws that UPA brought it in over the years, It will take NDA 10 yrs just to roll those back (forget actual work on the ground)... Chinese would have taken 1 day and got down to work from the next day onwards. Edited September 29, 2017 by surajmal

I don't know why would they mark numbers on the forehead but may so that people calling in to recognize the body could use the number .... A valid point. They could have used a better way to do that Edited September 29, 2017 by zen
tweaker
Authorities at the KEM hospital have come in for severe criticism for marking numbers on the bodies of the Elphinstone station stampede victims and putting up their pictures on public display. The hospital claimed the measure was taken to “avoid chaos”. The pictures of the victims, with numbers on their foreheads, were put up on a flex board at the hospital to expedite the process of identification, it said. The move created outrage on social media with people lambasting the hospital for its insensitivity.
The Dark Horse
Our people lose their minds if it rains :( The same is the case with people who drive vehicles. What if one gets wet, there's no need to panic.
beetle
RIP ........................... Insensitive indeed...but we have so much to more to be outraged about. We should be outraged about the obsession of an over populated country with producing children no matter what. We should be outraged about the lack of proper infrastructure. We should be outraged about our lack of civic sense and civic patience as a national culture. We question the treatment to the dead more than the living. In an overcrowded chaotic hospital, the numbers on the forehead were probably the fastest way for kin to identify and recover and claim the bodies of their loved ones. Tags on the clothes or hands/ feet would probably have been more respectful but then we are not the most sensitive of people when it comes to people other than our own immediate family. We shove and push in public places. We don't think about people ahead or behind us. rkt.india
rahulrulezz
That's the problem with us Indians, if so many people were killed by Pakistani terrorists, whole country would be in arms and anger. But since these deaths were because of one of negligences done by Indian system in general, it's ok. Pakistan is not our main threat, India is. We need to kill the big terrorists, that is Indian system of negligence, corruption, lack of planning. You out can see the attitude on ICf. Pakistan related threads,Rohingya threads get 100 responses but this thread, people are like meah, another day in India. Government needs to realize population crisis is a big deal, two child policy should be a must now. Rather than demonetization, two child policy should have been implemented first!!! What if one gets wet, there's no need to panic. It happened at 1030 am when people were going to work. It is inconvenient to reach work soaking wet. Folks always believe, get wet and you oatch a cold and get fever. There are too many cases of diseases like chiungunia, arthritic fever, dengue etc in several Indian cities in recent days Edited September 30, 2017 by coffee_rules
