On the bouncier tracks of SA, he can.  Key is whether he can get his lengths right.   Ishant is looking fitter and bowling more consistently than I have seen in quite some time.  Don't go by the past history, evaluate him as he is right now.

Ishant has a steep gradient he has to work with his angle more rather than pace on ball like Shami. His ball when it reaches batsman would probably be slower than Umesh/Shami, more at Bhuv's level, but it will be in a steeper gradient, which gives very little room for batsmen.

how many bowlers in the history of cricket could do that? Probbaly Garner, Ambrose, might be Walsh but he lacked pace. Don't remember anyone else.  Recently Mohammad Irfan.  You will have to be very tall to be able to get the ball bounced from a good length and it has nothing to do with pace but trajectory.  

 

In 2008 Aus tour, during CB series. Channel showed the comparison between Lee and Ishant pacewise. The comparison showed how Ishant's deliveries were 10K quicker when they reached the batsman than Brett Lee. They showed how a 141K released paced delivery pitched at the similar length from Brett Lee was 111K when it reached the batsman and Ishant's was 121K when it reached the batsman.

Yes .....  146 k release speed deliveries by both Ishant and Lee were compared ..... as far as I remember,  Ishant reached the batter at 121 k and Lee at 116 k

Ishant should be given the cap if Umesh isnt fit. Shami Bhuvi, Ishant and if need be put Sharadul Bhumrah as 4th bowler

I have a feeling that 4th and 5th bowlers will be Jaddu and Ashwin.
