Only Root averages 40+ despite playing relatively batting friendly pitches in India, UAE etc in last 5 years. Prior is not part of team anymore.

Did you use a cut-off?  Hameed did pretty well in the couple of tests he played in India?

But this is an excellent use of statistics to highlight the lack of quality in England's test batting.  No wonder they had to resort to the likes of Vince, Malan, Stoneman for the Ashes - which is a huge series for them.

Last 5 years and more than 250 runs.

The more I delve deeper into Root's stats the more over rated he looks. He certainly has a 2 year edge over Kohli (Smith is beyond reach), so let's see whether he improves or not. And England will do better by thinking about Cook's replacement, he has declined a lot since 2012.

Cook pants overseas record .

Cook record is basically pants for the last few years.   His decline is underway, its just a question of how quickly does he go to complete $h!t.   Plus, its not like England have capable test calibre openers waiting in the wings.  So that along with his stellar record of the past buys him a longer rope.

Root is clearly a quality capable bat - the conversion issue seems to be a mental thing more than anything - but is fast becoming a massive monkey on his back.  I think they made him captain a year too early.   But you can't always time that right I guess.

Having done the stat guru query you should start the thread with a quiz and then provide a running commentary with each incorrect answer. Good one.

Buttler has only played 6 away tests in his life though?

Don't the overwhelming majority of "real" cricket think that Buttler's batting isn't good enough for test cricket?  I happen to disagree.

Root scores 50 every 2.4 innings I guess which is much better than kohli.

He is at par with kohli with runs matches etc. even though being 2 yrs younger than him.

Being an english, he will get more tests.

His poor conversion factor is the only thing balancing out otherwise he will went pass kohli easily.

Its always a mistake to extrapolate player performance at the current level - there's no guarantee that Root will keep scoring 50+ regularly.  That's the kind of thinking that led a lot of idiots (England fans) to start claiming Cook was going to surpass Tendulkar.  Cook of the 27 away average over the last 2 years.

Tbh, because I don't pay to travel and watch England away (and can pretty much ignore away series since they're usually played overnight) but do pay a lot of money to watch them regularly during the home season, as long as they perform in home series I'm content. If they start *ing up at home as well a la West Indies then I may have to review the value for money I'm getting from watching them. But for now I'm happy enough. Typical Yorkshireman only interested in his wallet and bank account, I Know

lol at the likes of Cook, Anderson, Nasser who kept mentioning last year about India's lack of overseas batting success.... as if they are somehow the prototype to follow. don't throw stones when you live in a glass house.

When did Cook talk about India's struggles overseas? The other two yes but not something I can imagine Cook doing.

He defended jimmy Anderson' crticism of Kohli "hasn't scored runs in England"...you know Cook talking like he's Brian Lara
