Slip catching analysis - a strong indictment of Sridhar

Great article. Simple ,insightful stuff from Cullinan.

So poor. An indictment for Sridhar and our Chewtiyas indeed. India need to sort this out before England and Australia tours, otherwise we are really struggling to win abroad.

That amla drill looks very simple to integrate into our fielding drills.

The fielding coach can practise and practise and practise but what he can't do is control events in the field .

He can't control that moment when an edge is going to slips, heart rate, head thoughts, anxiety, muscle control, concentration.

During practise with no pressure I am sure these guys catch 19 out 20 every time but that pressure moment of taking a slip catch in test matches shows the men from the boys

Its more about anticipation then skill, Slip catching to me is like an art, which you can not forcefully learn. Kohli Rohit all are very good fielders but not best slip catchers.

I used to think the same thing, but from Darryl Cullinan's comments in the linked article, it seems that is not necessarily the case.  There is a science to it - proper weight transfer, body positioning, hand positioning etc. - that can be acquired by repetition and practice.  To use your art analogy, maybe some can never become Michelangelo, but with practice can at least do better than chicken-scratching.

What’s happening in Ranji?

Are catchers that bad too?

Unfortunately these skills never come to the fore IPL as hardly anyone fields in slips

For sure, the emphasis on LOIs has a lot to do with this.  Players don't develop skills that are unnecessary for career advancement.

Lol you guys point fingers at coaches when we loose. The problem is with cricketers do you really kohli , Dhawan will listen if they are told you guys need to change technique. These guys are with big egos don’t care for anything.

In that case, why invest in a fielding coach?  Either get someone who can motivate the players or forget the whole thing.

We should hire Hayden or Graeme Smith as specialist fielding coach for tests and drill these guys about slip fielding.

Obviously nothing of that sort will happen and it will get only worse when we go to England  and Australia.

with advent of IPL none of the overseas greats will be effective in commanding respect, they are all fairly 'domesticated'. super star culture has to end only then one can expect humble earnest practice to perfection in our super stars.

You may be correct, but then if all of this can be taught, then what our coaching staff is doing this problem is there since ages after dravid & laxman's retirement but why nobody is identified as a potential slip fielder. every match they change the combo.

Excellent article, what is Sridhar even doing with this bunch? With so much $$$$ can't BCCI hire someone better than this buffoon, apparently Shastri also favours him :wall:. According to this article, last 4 years before this series our success rate in slips and gully against the quick bowlers is 42% , damning statistic !!! Why is Kohli unwilling to accept that we have a serious catching problem? Before the tour a reporter pointed this out and Kohli showed his passive aggression, this is heartbreaking stuff for our bowlers.
Now what do u say abt R Sridhar's performance? This English series our slip catching was a revelation.

Even in IPL horrible catching was exposed. Think King 11 Punjab was the worst at fielding in IPL 2018. Not all catches were dropped at slip, but even IPL has exposed awful fielding.
