Oh boy.. I would talk mark waugh like performance from rahul any day

I am telling 'at best' .... if  he some how starts to perform  doing justice to his supposed 'potential level' .As of now Rahul is  on the verge of getting dropped. BTW Mark waugh is not at all an ATG in test crikcet

Still in top 100. Mark Waugh has close to 9000 runs in tests .

Mark Waugh was class. Rohit could be a fair comparison. Rahul right now is like vinod kambli.

Vinod Kambli has test average of 54.20 whereas  Rahul at this point is averaging 37. 71 runs per test innings. Vinod Kambli was head and shoulders above Rahul in whatever tests he played. Comparing two players who have difference of almost 17 runs in test cricket is very fanciful. The only drawback of Vinod Kambli was that he played just 17 tests and sample size could be said to be very small. However, having seen him he was the next best batsman to Sachin Tendulkar's average as well as skill-wise. Rahul has not even achieved what Ajinkya Rahane, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara have achieved in few years of peak. Those guys have had good years and are flopping now. Rahul has not had even a good test average, forget good years. He is young and he can overcome others by the time his career gets over, but to say he is comparable to  than those who have performed drastically better than him at this point of time is very fanciful.

Indian test batsmen who averaged between 35 and 40 (+- 2 runs on either side of Rahul's current test batting average):

Vinod Kambli flopped in ODI's though and Rahul is much  better in shorter formats than him. In tests, there is no comparison between Vinod Kambli and Rahul. One is head and shoulders above other in test and other is much superior in LOI format.

Rahul is excellent batsman in T20i format as his records suggests, and a average player in tests format. In ODI's too he needs to improve but having a prolific T20 game i expect he will cover up the ODI average in couple of years.

It is understandable  to compare two players if the difference of average is just few runs, but comparing two specialist batsmen have difference of 17 runs is comparing two totally differently performing batsmen.

Agree to most points, kambli was also a decent odi bat. He and sidhu were the first ones to have close to 40 average before Sachin took over .

But looking at these stats , feel that Rahul is heavily overrated .. if not for IPL , he would have been discarded long back....

Poor mayank.. what's the point scoring in ranji's..

Vinod Kambli under performed in ODI imo. His ODI average is 32.59.  Being a specialist batsman he should have done much better than that imo.

It is good to see Virat Kohli did not drop Rahul in spite of pathetic performance in SA and England as he was one player from whom Indian fans expected a above average performance in tests. Having played 31 tests, he is no more inexperienced.  Players careers have ended after failing during experimentation / development phase of 15 - 20 tests. Some have not even got more than 10 tests to prove.   Heck, some are not even lucky to get a test debut for Team India (recent example being Mayank Agarwal). So by  31 tests, Rahul is lucky  for whatever chances he has got to play at this level for a team which has huge reputation of producing batting ATG's and start performing. He needs to produce peak years. Virat Kohli can only persist with him in spite of below average results, but his career record is looking below par.  He himself has to get out of this situation considering he has got more than enough tests to grab the opportunity and make a mark, which he hasn't.

Hardik will walk in this T20 side in place of Rahul..Because Problem with Rahul is If not top 3 he cant bat else where..

Rohit/dhawan/kohli/pant/Hardik/Kartik/Krunal/Bhuvi/Kuldeep/Chahal/Bumrah

Looks Good

Can't have batsman averaging 29 at No. 5, 31 at No.6 and another one who cannot average over 30 at 7.
