Something which Akash Chopra did in 2003 on our tour to Australia. Doubt Murali Vijay and Rahul will even play 4 tests once youngsta Prithvi Shaw is back. Forget playing as many balls as Akash did.

Balls faced by Akash Chopra in 2003
Test 1 at Brisbane - 135 & 7
Test 2 at Adelaide - 44 & 54
Test 3 at Melbourne - 138 & 3
Test 4 at Sydney - 139 & 14

yep yep, it actually allowed the middle order to bat in middle overs & not early. This was one of the flaws of dada, didn't appreciate the value of a steady solid opener in search of aggro players.

And yet some clueless idiots lambast Akash Chopra for his 23 average.

They can only see stats but not context.

That guy was wayyy better than what his stats suggested.

Every Indian captain makes the same mistake. Not just for opening slot but every slot.

They favour no hopers like Yuvi, Raina and now Rohit over steady test match players.

Kaif should have been given more chance than Yuvi.

Chopra was one of the key architects of that  AUS drawn series in 2003-04. It was not the runs, but his grinding  & 'tiring  & wearing ' down of the bowlers that resulted in  batsmen to follow cashing on it so effectively.

Mayank Agarwal  has done a better job than what Akash Chopra did in 2003 i.e. see of the new ball even though Akash did not score many runs.

Mayank Agarwal: 191 runs (369 balls )
Average runs per innings : 63
Average balls faced per innings: 369 / 3 =  123 balls per innings.
Test 1 - Not in squad
Test 2- Not in squad
Test 3 - 72 (155) & 42 (102)
Test 4 - 77 (112)

Akash Chopra in 2003: 186 runs (536 balls)
Average runs per innings : 23.5
Average balls faced per innings: 536 / 8 = 67 balls per innings.

Test 1- 36 (135) &  4 (7)
Test 2- 27 (44) & 20 (54)
Test 3  - 48 (138) & 4 (8)
Test 4 - 45 (139) &  2 (14)

Vijay: 49 runs (154 balls)
Average runs per innings : 12.25
Average balls faced per innings: 154 / 4 =  approx 39 balls per innings.
Test 1 - 11(22) & 18 (53)
Test 2 - 0 (12) & 20 (67)
Test 3 - Sacked
Test 4 - Sacked

Rahul: 54 runs (113 balls)
Average runs per innings : 10.8
Average balls faced per innings: 113 / 5 =  approx 22 balls per innings.
Test 1 - 2 (8) & 44(67)
Test 2 - 2 (25) & 0(4)

agarwal has played only 3 innings so far, though. it's the 2nd opener that's the big problem here.

We had two openers problem since SA. Dhawan, Rahul and Vijay were all pathetic. Mayank has solved one problem for this tour.  He has given the batting average expected in home matches in this SENA tour.

Shaw likely to solve another.
