A Honest, Serious and Realistic Assessment of Team India for ICC CWC 2019

Let us set aside our personal prejudices and trolling and make an assessment of Team India's 15-member squad for the ICC CWC 2019. Three criteria:

  • Be honest (no prejudices of caste, religion, language, region etc.)
  • Be serious (present arguments to persuade others and not trolling for thrills or stirring the pot for kicks)
  • Be realistic (ground realities of BCCI selections for ongoing India and India A tours and Team Management's public statements)

  • We can only name 15-members in the final squad and replacements will only be allowed for injured players upon approval by ICC

I think that beside the first XI, in the remaining four, we need a reserve opener, a reserve wicket keeper, a reserve bowler, and a reserve all rounder. On this basis,. I think our strongest squad will be:

  1. Rohit
  2. Dhawan
  3. Kohli
  4. Gill
  5. Dhoni
  6. Kedar
  7. Hardik
  8. Bhuvi
  9. Kuldeep
  10. Bumrah
  11. Chahal
  12. Jadeja (as bowling all-rounder and to be used strategically for his fielding as 12th man)
  13. Shami (reserve fast bowler to rest Bhumrah given the number of matches)
  14. DK/Pant (reserve keeper and lower middle order bat)
  15. Shaw/Rahul (as reserve opener or top order bat if Kohli's back gives issues)

Now, the biggest unknown is IPL impact (work loads, summer heat, and player injuries).  What do you think?

You haven't even seen Gill and want to give the most important number 4 to him.  Considering whatever we have and the fact that dhoni will play, if we were to have a realistic chance dhoni has to bat at 4.  No 2 ways around it. Either kohli needs to bat with dhoni or needs to drop dhoni.

If dhoni is dropped we can consider Gill . But that's not gonna happen. Dhoni at 4 , jadhav at 5 and DK/pant at 6 and Hardik at 7. Thats the best bet we have .

  1. Dhawan
  2. Rohit
  3. Kohli
  4. Jadhav
  5. DK / Rayudu
  6. Pandya H.
  7. Dhoni  ( Moves up to #4 if 3 down before 17th over)
  8. Bhuvi
  9. Kuldeep  (Replace with  Shami against BD, Pak, Afg, SL)
  10. Chahal
  11. Bumrah
  12. Shami
  13. Rayudu
  14. Jadeja
  15.  Shreyas Iyer / KLPD / Gill

This squad doesn't account for injuries, which I'm assuming will allow for last minute replacements.  So just like 2015, BCCI should fly in the following players to England and keep them ready to go:

  1. Rishabh Pant
  2. KLPD / Gill
  3. Mayank Markande
  4. Khaleel
  5. Chahar / Siraj

i think most of us have seen enough of gill to know he'll come good , rayudu is a big worry with his struggles currently and in fielding as well.

Gill for two reasons:

1. Selectors have fast tracked him into the squad. Whether he gets a debut or not is Team Management''s decision

2.  Rahul's horrid run and Rahane's continues strike rotation issues in the middle order leave us exposed. Unless we bring back Manish Pandey at 4 for yet another run at 4.

I am happy to be proven wrong about Rayudu. But once the final 15 is annouced, I will fully back them to succeed.

Yes, and guys like Yuvi and Zak debuted in CT2000 and did well so there is no harm in bringing in new players .... Sidhu, iirc, only played a few games occasionally before he is brought in the WC squad in 1987, where he enjoyed success

Selected properly India can have the best team.

That is the real problem, isn't it? Our biggest weakness is poor selections as evidenced during the recent overseas tours.

First things first, Selectors to get the 15 members right

Second and last, Team Management to get the match day playing XI right.

I am really worried one or both of the above will screw us during the world cup.

If gill is not ready, bring pant into middle order.MSD is untouchable.

But give gill 5 matches first.2 matches in NZ and 3 vs aus.

Most likely the 15 member squad

Rohit

Dhawan

Kohli

Rayudu/Gill

Dhoni

Jadhav,DK&Pant

Hardik & Jadeja

Bhuvi&Shami

Kuldeep

Chahal

Bumrah

Only rayudu is uncertain . All others would come in. Pant will make it to team due to x factor.  If rayudu sucks in 3rd odi, then Gill had chance.

My strongest XI

Rohit

Dhawan

Kohli

Gill

Dhoni

Jadhav

Hardik

Shami

Kuldeep

Bumrah

Chahal

Rahul (over rayudu, manish)

Kartik (atm inspires more confidence than pant in odis)

Bhuvi

Jadeja (over khaleel/umesh/kaul)

More likely this will be the contingent to WC.

From the current squad in NZ...shanker, siraj are just to make up numbers.

Hope rayudu and khaleel dont spoil it. I will prefer shaw and umesh over them.
