Are you pro-life or pro-choice? If you think killing a baby is kosher, why not allow the same who wants to die out of choice?

Pro-choice only for the people who suffer physically.

many commit suicide for mental/emotional issues , they don't understand that time will heal their pain :((

That's my mantra as well... time is the best healer.

Read Supreme Court's judgement in Aruna Shanbag case and last year's ruling on passive euthanasia.

Passive Euthanasia is legal in India.

Passive Euthanasia, however, is different from Assisted Death. In Passive Euthanasia, a terminally ill patient's demise is hastened by the withdrawal of medical treatment. In the case of Assisted Death, the patient isn't terminally ill and is killed by a deliberate act.

An omission to hasten death vs an act to kill, basically. Assisted Death has far too many caveats in the Indian context. I don't see the green signal on this one in the foreseeable future.

Yaar it's not so simple.

Depression is a disease. Many people never get treated for it and end up killing themselves. Even when we prescribe medicine to people, many stop taking it all together or show poor adherence to the medication plans.

Time doesn't heal depression much unless the people are getting medicated.

Yaar I have come to believe that as human beings we are just a result of our past, our present circumstances, luck etc.

We don't have as much control or as much choice as we think we have...

Agree with what you said.

I was coming from acute vs chronic point of view, from cycles point of view (crest n trough).... sometimes you feel very bad...but if you had this belief or mantra that you always always remember, that time is the best healer and that nothing is permanent, then it may help you in hard times.

It was supreme court of India which took the initiative for the Passive Euthanasia.

I am hopeful, when the time comes, then again the Supreme Court will intervene and introduce Active Euthanasia too in name of  basic human right.

Off course we could forget about Politicians in India. They will certainly not be able to do any thing regarding active Euthanasia.

While in Islamic countries like Pakistan, both politicians as well as Supreme Court is not able to introduce the active Euthanasia, while Allah told them them that HE is almighty, and He could heal anyone any time, and thus they should keep on SUFFERING but don't commit suicide, but  they should only keep on praying to Him and keep on asking His mercy, while He is all merciful.

And at the end, 100% patients are dying the painful deaths in Pakistan, and causing a lot of pain to their families too.

I would be happy if at least discussions take place in national media upon this issue, and a struggle is made to come to any conclusions and decisions. At least allow the active Euthanasia for those who are in extreme pain and no chance that medical world could heal them in the next 1-2 years.

If such discussions are not taking place in the Media openly, then it is alarming and at least this situation should be changed.

The problem is MONEY here. Some of the them can't afford doc fees here in western countries. It's way too high and also young people don't really like to talk about depression openly.

This is not true. There are many things that Time can't heal.

Does the ' allowed ' passive euthanasia allow active pain relief from the doctor while withdrawing treatment ?

Can the doctor be forced to give painrelief while not letting him treat any further?

I hope passive  euthanasia is not just....ghar le jao aur dua karo.

Most of the passive Euthanasia cases are those of comatose people. So the question of pain relief doesn't really arise.

Let me explain with an example. There is an old man 75-80 years old and has suffered from a stroke. He has been admitted to the ICU and they are trying to revive him, but the duration of the stroke has resulted in many organs being permanently damaged and his kidneys don't work too well and his kreatinin levels are increasing causing some kind of sepsis. For this the line of treatment involved puts a lot of pressure on his heart and he keeps getting strokes and has to be revived. After trying for a few days if they see that the consider that the condition is just worsening, the doctors would apprise the family of the situation and the family can take a call.

The SC did not take Suo Moto for the Shanbaug case. A journalist had written a plea which was admitted.

I am not too sold on Active Euthanasia. Far too many complications in the Indian context. Unless we have faster turn around judicial times, it is going to be misused.
