Our batting order is dysfunctional and raising concern is valid.

On a track where 250 looked a good score and even Aussies would have had a tough time chasing lets not keep raising red flags. Sure Shankars role is under scrutiny but i am sure Kohli knows what he is doing and if Shankar has to be replaced they will.

The problem is that Indian batting seems to lack that extra gear needed to knockout teams with batting as they rely on the bowlers and so far this has worked. But on the day the bowling misfires, can we win a batting shootout on a flat pitch? Not sure of that. Our batting is a bit similar paced and way too methodical. We go for par scores way too early. 

 

We need a couple of mavericks who are allowed to go hell for leather and blast us off to rapid starts to put pressure on opposition bowlers. The remaining 3 batsmen + dhoni can always consolidate and Pandya can finish strong. Our approach on the powerplay seems to be conservative regardless of conditions.

it's because we find ourselves in the highly unusual position of a bowling-centric team than a batting one.

And that's a problem. If our bowling happens to fail on the day of semis or final and happens to be a flat pitch?

Playing slowly and playing like dhoni is entirely different. He doesn't play slow he kills the game, let me know who else played like him 28(52)   and 18(40) balls which eventually he make up by last over hitting.

we scored 330 and 350 on batting pitches that we played on that too against good bowling attacks. So, not they do not lack extra gear.

I think Atherton summed up perfectly near the end of this game. He said it was not a "hit on" wicket but a "bat on" wicket. He meant you increase the chances of scoring big by partnerships, working the singles/doubles and doing the hard work. With variable bounce wickets, the horizontal bat shots are risky. Allan Border used to say "shelve the cut, pull and hook" on such wickets. Can't argue with that. Having said that India should have scored 10-20 runs more than what we did. We barely made the average score here.

 

Dhoni is unable to rotate the strike and just ends up blocking. But still he did a better job than Jadhav and Shankar in not getting out and creating a partnership with Pandya. We didnt have a reliable lower order player after Pandya. Maybe its time to promote him to no.4 and play Pant at no.7 or bring KLR to no.4 and open with Pant. We can't go with this madness of having Jadhav and Shankar along with Dhoni. It may cost the team big in crucial games.

 

When you approach the 40th over with 3 wickets down, you can accelerate on both ends. When you are 5 down with the last recognized batsmen at the crease, you have to bide your time until the 45th over. This is ODI batting. Anyone who disagrees, they dont know their cricket.
