The Realist Posted November 28, 2019 Posted November 28, 2019 Would have made little difference as always had a crap trundler fodder bowling attack. Tiwary has always been underrated, and still is as only 29... nevada 1

He would have hired the right bowlers for them in the coming auctions and that would have made difference for RCB. In any case, I think MI will not have given up on Rohit for any price in that auction and would have fought out RCB given that they know SRT is on his last legs and Rohit is already an IPL star with a great future ahead. TNAmarkFromIndia Posted November 29, 2019 Posted November 29, 2019 In 2011, people had this idea of Rohit Sharma that he was an IPL achiever and international underachiever. He was already given lots of chances in internationals and failed to grab his opportunities. When you take that into consideration, this wasn't such an awful pick. Tiwary was a promising new talent at that time.

Rohit was terribly inconsistent in internationals but has been a very very valuable player in IPL and won the rising player award in 2009. He along with Gilchrist was vital in making DC perform so well in 2009 and 2010. Any person with an iota of cricketing acumen will bet on Rohit Sharma than Saurabh Tiwary (who always seemed like a hack) even at that time for IPL. The fact that Tiwary was promising in no way implied he deserved that auction price of $1.6 million. RCB made several blunders and this is one of them. (In any case, I don't think RCB could have bought Rohit in that auction given that MI wanted him badly.)

What a player gets depends a lot on the requirements of each franchise and also the timing of the player's name coming up in the auction. It's possible RCB were saving up for someone else when Rohit's name came up and when they got who they wanted, they looked at their purse and thought they could go all out on a middle order Indian batsman and then Tiwary's name came up.

Sure, I agree with that. Honestly I don't think I ever saw an auction livestream. But yeah, that is possible that it is the timing and other factors that led them to pick Tiwary for such a big price. Still, they have not made an intelligent investment though. May be the owners are getting more matured in the auction process every year. Edited November 29, 2019 by sarcastic

If they have money in their purse and there aren't many good options left in the auction, I don't see why. It changes the entire dynamic of the team. Maybe they felt Tiwary could be a regular in the XI. If they didn't pick him, they'd either have to compensate by having one foreign batsman in the middle order which might mean one less spot for an overseas bowler, or they'd have to play an uncapped player at the risk of him not performing upto their requirements of that spot. Anyone who's followed the auction enough knows that someone going for a higher price doesn't necessarily mean they're the best players. If the franchise owners don't have a problem with spending money, why do you? They'll spend money depending on the quality of players left in the auction and the money left in their purse.

Obviously, I don't have any problem with any player going for any price and franchises paying them anything. But I understand that the franchises themselves realize their buys were overpriced at a later time and it is obvious that many choices the franchises make at an auction are not necessarily the best ones for them either. When they realize it at the of the season or two and they will release him back to the auction. As an example, Ishant Sharma is bought for 950,000 by KKR (after his heroics in Australia in that 2007-08 season) only to be released at the end of 2010 season and no franchise ever picked Ishant at such a high price. It is obvious that he was bought at a price higher than what franchises ideally want to spend the money for him in the first season. He was lucky enough to get that money for three seasons(and personally I am happy for him too). My point is, in retrospect do franchises believe that they made best possible decision by buying a player at a certain player at certain price? I don't think they do for some cases like I described above. And it is natural that these are business decisions made by them and they do go wrong. But overall, I think franchises mature with time and are improving their ability to make such decisions on players. A team such as MI is so successful mostly because of the intelligent way they scout for talent and purchase them at good prices. Most of their Indian player buys have become long term prospects to them and they are doing well. Same thing can be said about CSK as well with regard to core set of Indian players.

It still happens, especially now that domestic players are also in the auction. Teams like MI and CSK don't need to do much because their core is mostly set already. But other teams that are still unsure of their core group of players will keep bidding high for the next new promising young talent on the block in the hopes that they can take the team farther this time. diga Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 Saurabh Tiwary was the U-19 team vice captain under Virat Kohli if I am not mistaken.. Guess who influenced that bid of 1.6m$?

Btw, Kohli was not captain at that time. It was Vettori. They gambled on Tiwari as he had a good 2010 season and got capped by India. It backfired big time.
