Rather have wkt taking bowler who can make the diff of opp total then that extra batting of 10-15 runs which also will come once in a while I think the issue here is that Jadeja is going to be a fixture in this team @7. So that leaves us going with 3 seamers + 1 spinner option among the bowlers and Ashwin may not be preferred over either Chahal or Kuldeep. It's in such situation we have to look at one of the seamers to take up the batting responsibility at 8. Again pure guess work from me. Edited December 25, 2019 by Vickydev Link to comment
R!TTER
Jadeja isn't a bad option when the tracks are turning or dry, in fact of the current lost he's the safest bet on such tracks, especially in India come Spring or Summer. It's in winter under the lights most of these spinners face issue, especially in India. It's too bad the IPL makes it impossible to schedule some high profile games near April, as for his utility outside it really depends on the track. I'd say on small grounds he's no better or worse than Kuldeep, except Kuldeep is the more "attacking" option. Chahal is a mental midget & not worth debating, then the only other alternatives we have are Sunday, KP & Gowtham. I'd say 2 if not all 3 should be tried before the WT20 & definitely should be in the 15-16 for ICC tournaments in India, provided they don't flop badly. Link to comment

speedheat
Saini have to master the art of death bowling otherwise Bhuvi will sneak in with the excuse of reducing damage in death overs. An attack of Shami bumrah Saini Pandya and Kuldeep will be perfect in odis. Edited December 25, 2019 by speedheat Mosher and express bowling 2 Link to comment

All he has to do is execute it under pressure. And it will come if he gets to play a few LOIs on the trot. That is the key. saik, tweaker and Mosher 1 2 Link to comment

But slower balls and last minute change in pace are also crucial in death overs one area which is lacking in Saini. Hopefully ipl will help him in developing those skills. Link to comment

express bowling
On 12/25/2019 at 7:44 AM, sarcastic said: The difference is that Thakur can bat and Saini cannot. Thakur is needed as a pace bowling all rounder who could bowl at greater than 135 KMPH and pick few odd wickets but comfortably finish his 10 overs quota and then help the team win with the bat like the situations in 3rd ODI. Saini's duty is to bowl fast and get wickets for his team with his bowling alone. Team India needs both of them for different roles in the team. India needed 30 runs to win in 23 balls when Thakur came into bat and because it was Thakur, India chased within 49 overs. If we had some one like Saini or Bumrah who is a good bowler but a mug with the bat at number 8 position, we would have lost it. Every player is different and valuable to the team in different ways. We do not need to belittle someone to praise the other. Problem is ... squad selections by the selectors or team selections by the TM are not made keeping in mind such astute observations. If 3 pacers are picked then ---- Atkeast 2 should be the best bowlers available for the format. ---- Atleast 2 pacers should have sufficient pace. ---- Only 1 maybe picked based on his batting ability. But that is not done often enough. Shami, Chahar and Shardul were the original selections. Chahar has batting ability and can be used at 8. Why was Shardul picked then ? It should have been Shami, Saini and Chahar in the first place ... and Shardul should have replaced an injured Chahar. If that was done then what you are saying would make perfect sense. Sadly, that is not the case. Link to comment
MCcricket
Chalk n cheese it is the quality between the two, Saini could be another Bumrah or Pollock, Shardul doesn't have a quality to be a test bowler or even a decent ODI bowler. How many times we have seen before unless you are playing for SA and a guy like Philander could have a decent career, a 132 pacer be a Mohit, Chahar, Unadkattar BK will be condition dependent and cannot be a game changer. I don't care about a bits a pieces pacer who can occasionally slog 20 runs Link to comment
