Kohli's ability as a captain to win from a back to the wall situation?

This is not a knock against Kohli the batsmen. I think he is a clutch player and don't agree with people pointing his performances in the knockouts. His knock in 2011 WC final was very valuable. Anyway that's another debate.

 

Kohli's wins are usually in situations where the team is on top and is running through the opposition but as captain I have never seen him make things happen strategically when team is on the backfoot.

 

For example we win convincingly or get trashed in a one-sided contest. Usually the fact that we win convincingly  is the mark of someone having a great team.

 

We have seen some great comeback from behind wins under Dhoni, Ganguly,Dravid or even Azharuddin of all people.

 

Take a look at our loss recently against Aus in the 1st odi, they absolutely smacked us with 10 wickets in hand or CT Final or other such games.

 

Same goes for RCB,they either smash opposition to the ground or lose close games/ lose badly.

 

I don't think Kohli is innovative enough or capable enough to try something out of the box.

His entire captaincy is ONLY about individual brilliance, which is a trend that runs through all defensive captains who are poor strategically and tactically. Best exemplified by lack of even one good young player making a debut and cementing his place during his captaincy tenure. That also explains no major trophies including IPL.

The only time I recall something like that during his captaincy is the Bangalore Test vs Aussies in 2017. At 1-0 down, we were shot out for < 200 on Day 1 but managed to keep their run scoring down on Day 2 due to disciplined bowling and were able to dismiss them without conceding a huge lead on Day 3. Even then it took a borderline ATG partnership between Pujara and Rahane in our 2nd innings to get us to a fighting total.

His captaincy issue wud be loosing nerves in KO games like was the case with ganguly. Thats why im pretty sure he wont anything or something once in blue moon like natwest was for ganguly due to yuvi n kohli.

 

Coming to back to wall situation as batsman he can do which ganguly dhoni cudnt as well as kohli can but as captain yea he cant coz he gets restless very soon. A restless mind cant think clearly.Lucky for him earlier he had Dhoni and now he ll have leadership core of Rohit, Iyer, Rahul, Bumrah, bhuvi, Shami, ishant,ashwin who all are very experienced or doing captaincy for IPL sides

what would you call winning 2 super overs? When no one even expected it to go to Super Over? And don't say now "Team brilliance" or "NZ choked" because that would apply to us losing the 1st ODI too..

He is a poor selector of people in the playing XI, but i have no issues with his on field strategies.

He won one super over and Rohit hitting back to back 6s to win it had  nothing to do with Kohli's captaincy

Captaincy can make a difference but the most important thing is the actual performance of players on the field. With analysts in support staff, coaches for different skills and senior players in the playing 11 a lot of inputs are passed to captain. Still the team with more quality players will win with a rubbish captain but a team with the best captain captaining a team with below par players will keep losing.
