Can India pull it off by scoring 400+ runs in second innings

I can see that NZ may get a lead of upto 150 (at the most) but India should wrap up their tail quickly before lunch. 

But for India to have a realistic chance in this match, they need to bat 4 sessions or more and score 400 runs in their second innings.
This way NZ will have a target of 250+ runs in its 4th innings chase and I don't see that happening that easily. 
India can wrap up NZ batsmen due to the pressure of playing 4th innings and India can get its much deserved victory.

Make their captain think of saving runs rather than taking wickets.

Yes. But the key is not runs but sessions. They need to play out 4 sessions to be in contention.
