Germany has managed to keep deaths low, compared to the total infections. 27,000+ infected and only 93 dead so far. Compare this to Italy 50,000 infected, close to 5000 dead. Spain 28,000 infected, close to 1800 dead and US 27,000 infected and 350 dead.

It has been said that there are two strains of this virus. One is highly virulent, one isn't.  Age is also a factor.

Slight clarification: There are two identified forms (L and S), not different enough to be called strains.  The L type is a bit more aggressively infectious, but is not deadlier.  They are not different enough to hinder comprehensive cure or vaccine development.
