'Pharmacy of the World will deliver': India begins COVID-19 vaccine exports

“First consignment takes off for Bhutan!” was the first of a flurry of tweets from the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Anurag Srivastava, as he posted pictures of batches leaving and arriving at different destinations, “Indian vaccines reach Maldives, reflects our special friendship.”

“India is deeply honoured to be a long-trusted partner in meeting the healthcare needs of the global community,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted Tuesday as he announced the first shipments would be sent today.

India is sending these vaccine batches “under grant assistance”, a foreign ministry press release said, as the government had “received several requests for the supply of Indian manufactured vaccines from neighboring and key partner countries.”

Dubbed “Neighbourhood First”, Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy focus has often been on improving ties with India’s immediate neighbors, which would explain the destination of these first vaccine shipments.

India’s External Affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said his country was fulfilling “its commitment to give vaccines to humanity…The Pharmacy of the World will deliver to overcome the COVID challenge,” he tweeted . India is home to the world’s largest vaccine producer by volume, the Serum Institute of India (SII), based in Pune.

The Serum Institute is producing the vaccine developed by Oxford University and Astra Zeneca under the local brand name COVISHIELD and will distribute it to India, its neighboring countries and other low and middle income countries.

Its a matter of great pride for all of us that India is the most sought after country for this pandemic. Credit where due and good to see foreign media is acknowledging it. But surprised to see hardly any coverage of it on Indian media who are busy with Arnab Goswami, Tandav & Farmers.

This is a great start!

Next steps:

  • The time to do derivative work is over.  It is now time to focus on indigenous R&D - develop more products from own research, and not just serve as factories for medicines developed by other nations.  Covaxin is an excellent start; just wish they had not rushed the approval process before Phase III was completed.
  • Continue to enforce strict implementation of clinical trial protocols.
  • Biopharma - India is poised to carve out its own niche in this space.  The manufacturing know-how already exists in India.  Again, indigenous R&D.
  • Agbiotech - again, there is huge potential here for scientists-farmer collaborations to serve up high-yield, stress-resistant crops (more food on less land).  The Bayers and BASFs of the world are not going to help develop high-yield millets and pulses for Indian conditions.  Our scientists must be given free reign to do it themselves.  Reduce the regulatory burden on GMOs.  Deregulate and democratize gene editing.

See they don't mind Hindu symbols, it is a sight for sore eyes. It is a reference to Sanjeevini. But for our intellectuals it is communal and hurts minorities' feelings

I love the symbolism in that picture.  Does a great job of depicting India's cultural connection to healing.

Overheard at NDTV studios -  Obviously this tweet was one of the conditions once vaccines were shipped.

It is smart even for an Indian PR firm to come up with symbolism connecting with sanjeevni, our Ayurvedic roots.

It is interesting how this got big headlines because sabotage was suspected at first, but as soon as the evidence started to point towards it being "just an accident," this news got buried.  If there was more evidence of sabotage, I'll bet that the news media would be all over this thing and making those 5 dead workers martyrs and heroes.  Just human nature, I suppose ...

I listened to a radio program yesterday wherein the guest talked about how the US government pumped nearly $1billion of taxpayers' money into Moderna for vaccine development.  They didn't say anything about Pfizer, J&J and other companies, but am sure they got taxpayer funds for this work, too.

But there is no national pride associated here with vaccine development or production.  It's only because of people's money that these companies were able to roll this out as quickly as they did.  But there is no patriotism associated with this.  Contrast this with India - private companies such as SII (production only) and Bharat Biotech (R&D and production), with GoI backing, produce vaccines - it is immediately billed as a matter of national pride.  Why the difference?

As for me personally, I can't wait for India to leverage this manufacturing success into greater investment and success in cutting-edge R&D in bio-medicine and biotechnology!!
