Has Pant already eclipsed Dhoni as a TEST batsman ?

I think he, Bumrah and Jaiswal will end up as GOATs in their respective disciplines. Bumrah is almost there. Don't forget Jaiswal, he is like a combination of Gavaskar and Sehwag, bus apna slip catching sudhar le bhai, or move to another position.

Yeah...it's incredible India is blessed with two potential GOATs in their positions in Pant and Bumrah and yet haven't been able to fully capitalise on their talent.

Gilchrist batted at number 7 behind a very strong Aussie top order. Pant has spent most of his time with a shaky top order and his overseas stats are amazing for an Indian batsman let alone a keeper. He has more hundreds in England than Gavaskar and Kohli in England 7 years into his career. He has another 4-5 years left at the peak of his batting powers so if he can sustain it, he should end up at the very top.

Don't forget Pant's role in the team is that of a wicketkeeper. Comparing him with an opener doesn't really work.

I'm not comparing him as a batter. I'm talking about his natural game and their batting approach. Sehwag didn't need to get his eye in and could go for his shots right from the start. But Pant needs time to get in. Pant generally bats slowly for his first 50 runs in Tests and then explodes, whereas Sehwag would go after the bowling right from the start.

 

That's the reason Pant isn't a good fit for shorter formats, especially T20s. Longer the format, better Pant is.

In Tests, Pant is far ahead. In white-ball cricket Dhoni is light years ahead of Pant. That's why formats matter and just because you're good in one, you'll not automatically be great in another. There're very few elite players who are good across formats. In the current team, Bumrah and Jaiswal are the only two who walk into all 3 formats.

Indeed in test, which is what the thread is about, he has outperformed and out-classed Dhoni.

I think Pant can be a very good ODI batsman too, was just coming into his own in ODIs before his injury
