Its futile comparing against china. From cricket context its like comparing associate nation nepal with Australia or for that matter comparing bhutan against Argentina in football. Chinas medal tally in this olympics has already surpasser indias overall ever..the thing to look into is incremental gains a nation makes during Olympics and who are the next level or sportsperson breaking out. In 2004 RS Rathodes silver ushered in a new era of shooting and although we have faltered this year India has Multiple gold medallist and a fantastic shooting ecosystem which has been created. We also have overall 4 olympic medals in shooting. Same goes for badminton with Saina Nehwal and her breakthrough. For India this olympics Hockey, Womens Boxing, Weightlifting will surely be flag bearers..

Although it is amazing to see China do what they have in sports - I would laud countries like Oz or the US more. They don't force kids into sport. They are amazing because of their sports systems and culture. I hope we reach there over the next decade or so.

 

I doubt most Chinese would give a crap about most of these games - other than Badminton, TT or athletics. Of course they would be very happy to see their countrymen/women do so well.

The hell is not forcing people into sport? How do you know US does not force people into sport and China does and even if they do why is it a bad thing? It’s sport not terrorism and US has far better facilities than China and still China was able to surpass them in 2008 Beijing

China has has OLYMPIC training schools for several decades. China spends billions of dollars EVERY YEAR on its Olympic training schools. How can there be any comparison in results ?

 

China focuses on 4-5 medal rich competitions and ploughs in Billions of dollars.

 

Like all communist set ups this bears results - East germany has won more gold medals than the mighty US in some olympics, topping the table. 
 

The moot point is China spends dozens of billions of dollars on global sports like soccer and basketball and still sucks at it - because Europeans and Latinos have way ore talent.
