Mumbai lost by 2 runs. Vengsarkar cried all the way to the dressing room. He was stranded at 139. Tendulkar made 96.  Vengy added 47 runs for the last wicket. One boundary away from win. But run out curtailed the innings. One of the three run outs.

Ranji Trophy Final Karnataka vs Delhi 1981

 

In Ranji whoever gets the first innings lead wins the match. No need to finish both the innings.

 

Karnataka batted for 256 overs and posted 705. Usually you would expect opposition to wilt after standing on the ground for 2.5 days. Not Delhi. They batted 250 plus overs and made 707/8. Incredible match.

Guy like Roger Binny would have been a great asset in SENA countries.He could really swing the ball and was gun bowler against left handers. He could bat too.

given how weak india was in late 80s and early 90s, there were plenty of players from both teams who should have been given a chance, esp in home conditions: Kaypee, Hattangadi, and Deepak Sharma come to mind

This is another match. Those days run rates used to be like 1.5, 2. One guy that changed that trend was Krish Srikkanth. 400 plus chase in 4th innings was a rarity. ROI reached 424 in 83 overs (@ 5.08 RR). Srikkanth made 83 & 116. Opening bowler vasan went for 52 runs in 5 overs.

One more thing. Back in the days bowlers could bat very well. Madanlal was as good as a specialist bat. So was Binny who opened the innings for Karnataka. Even for India in some matches.  Sandhu can bat. Chetan sharma batted at 3 and made a century in one of the one dayers.

Those days pitches were belters. Approach to the longer versions of the game was very different. No matter how good the batting conditions were batting was always one-dimensional. Guys like Sandip Patil, Sreekanth changed that approach somewhat. Nobody was willing to push for the results due to this first innings lead rule.

^ Yusuf one was the largest 4th innings successful chase in India's first class history right?  Terrific. Due to IPL Indian batsmen hardly take part in domestic matches a reason why there is a dip in performance against spin. Mayank was fluent in the 2nd test against spin while others were struggling.

That manish pandey catch match.  More than the runs he made the catch he took left everyone stunned. Karnataka came within touching distance to win the final against Mumbai. Agarkar nailed the final wicket. Manish Pandey played a stunning knock chasing 331. He ended up scoring 144 in 152 balls. They were well on target at 255/3. Agarkar/Kulkarni triggered a collapse.

 

68.3 Abdulla strikes and a gets the big wicket of Pandey, tossed up outside the off stump, the ball spins and Pandey who is forward with an angled bat, gets the edge to Jaffer at first slip. What a knock we have witnessed, well done Pandey, he raises his bat to the crowd as he walks back to the pavilion. 255/4

Kapil went at 4 rpo, Yogesh Bhandari at 7 rpo, Chetan Sharma 3.5 rpo

 

So it seems that an 18 year old dude came to bat when team was in trouble due to early wickets and started smashing international bowlers.

that was one heck of a match and showed why SRT was so highly rated even as a youngster.
