Ponting versus Sangakkara

Ponting and Sangakkara are top contenders for the #3 slot in an AT Test 11 for Aus and SL respectively. Who would be your pick?

At #3 (excluding BD and Zim, and when not playing as WK)

  • Ponting, avg 55
  • Sangakkara, avg 61 (Statistically, the best batsman from Asia)

For me -> This is too close to call. Will go with Sangakkara for his elegance and better all round game versus both pacers and spinners. A left-hander as well and can keep if required.

Mentioning averages without runs tally is not worth.

How many runs did Sanga score vs top eight team and how many did Ponting scored and at what average? That would give us idea of who was better between the two?

Ponting was comfortably a better LOI batsman though.

Ponting would be a top contender for #3 slot  for ATG Australian team? Don't think so.. there's another guy with an average of 103.xx batting at 3 for Australia

On topic - Great comparison. I'd pick Sangakkara in Asia and Ponting in SENA

Sanga averaged 45 in Sena. Ponting averaged 49 in Wens. Remember, WI had a potent bowling in 90s and till mid 2000s.

Sanga's SENA equivalent for Ponting will be BAPS (or BAPUS after adding UAE). Now run the stats guru filters and see who comes up to be better.

We are talking about modern players

Forget that. SENA for Asian batsmen and Asia for non-Asian batsman - this will be the most fair criteria i.e if at all you ant to be selective

Sangakkara was elegant? Ponting was more elegant than him

Sangakkara was elegant Ponting was like Kohli not elegant but still great to watch when in touch. Ruthless aggression.

Sangakkara wasn't great against the best bowling lineups of his time. That is quite obvious.

Similarly Ponting wasn't a good player of spin and failed in India.

Both of them played most of their career on flat tracks of the noughties and early 2010s.

If I had to chose one I"ll go with Ponting coz he was good in 4th innings unlike other batsman.

Hard choice but I'd go with Ponting because he won World cups at will and dominated everyone everywhere (except India in India)

Ponting averages 97 in uae, 119 in Pakistan though very small sample size. 48 in SL. Only in India, he struggled. Ponting struggled against spin is a myth. He struggled mostly against bhajji, just a mental block.

I never said that. All I said was SENA for Sanga = Asia for Punter

Now compare the two

Sanga in SENA: 30 tests 2500+ runs@46, 7 100s and 11 50s (as a specialist batsman, 18 tests, 1922 runs@59, 7 100s and 10 50s)

Ponting in Asia: 28 tests 1900 runs@42, 5 100s and 10 50s

What do the numbers tell you?

Stat wise as a specialist bat, Sanga is even better than Tendulkar in Sena.

Sachin stands above these guys for what he did in the 1990s - towering above everyone else in the toughest decade for batsmen. Sanga is close but his record improved as quality of bowlers went down (not his fault, but he maximised those opportunities)

Among Asian batsmen, my top 5 list is Gavaskar, Sachin, Sanga, Dravid, Miandad
