How good was this innings?

some unbelievable hitting. Not the worst bowling attack either. One of the greatest 200’s and 4th innings score of all time.

 

I remember watching Nathan Astle score a 100 vs England in the 1996 WC opener. Superb player.

 

one of those guys who would tuk tuk or look ordinary on some days but suddenly out of nowhere play an explosive blinder. Usually Nzl, Pak, SL have a lot of these players. Ind,Eng,Aus, SA, WI players are usually predictable with their approach.

 

Anyways look at that crisp hitting. The sound of the timing on that bat, just sounds great. Where would you rate this knock?

hitting after the game was nearly over. Still lost by 100 runs IIRC

 

entertaining knock but can't rate it too high

I remember following this live. NZ tracks for years have this behavior. Batting becomes easier on day 5.  Small grounds, belter of a wicket. Nothing to lose. He kept taking chances. It was coming off.

Astle was mercurial, just like Gibbs & Mark Waugh. He had amazing talent and skills, and put you in awe when on song, but he never had the consistency.
Stephen Fleming was better and gritty, in mould of Steve Waugh. Didn't had all the strokes but was ready to grind it out and fight back.
