Team post 2023 | Players that need to be backed|

Just looked at a post that said the average age of India's WC squad is upwards of 32. And it may well be even higher in the world Cup next year with thigh slapper/Shami likely to return.

It's a fact that most of the "key" players we have right now are at the fag end of their respective careers. No matter what the result of the big events in the next 14 months might be, it's high time that we do a complete cleanup post the home world cup so that the future core players get to gel together as a team. If I was the chief selector or the head coach, I would bin all the below guys all at once post the '23 wc-

From all formats -

Rohit

Kohli

Dhawan

Pujara

Rahane

Vihari

Dinesh Karthik

Bhuvi

Chahal

Ishant

Shami

Umesh

From White ball cricket - Ashwin, Jadeja

Core of the team should be Rahul, Pant, Gill, Bumrah, Pandya, Siraj, Axar, Bishnoi , Sundar

Ample opportunities should be given to Ruturaj, Jaiswal, Umran, Tyagi, Prasidh, Mohsin and the other U19 kids that will come up.

Ideally for the 2025 Champions Trophy I'd have a lineup something similar to below -

Shaw/Ruturaj

Jaiswal

Gill

Iyer

Rahul

Pant

Pandya

Axar

Bishnoi/Tyagi

Bumrah

Siraj/Prasidh

There is a T20 WC in USA in 2024 (unless the thread is on ODIs):

Gill

Samson or equivalent

Hooda or Sundar or Jaiswal (if he can bowl) or Tilak Verma (could have issues versus short ball) or equivalent  ... basically someone who can bowl too

SKY

Sir Don (c)

Pant

Tewatia

Moshin

Bumrah

Bishnoi or equivalent

Umran

Point is -

We don't want the senior leeches to hang on for even a little longer just for the sake of it. The current core group that we have have together played at least 10 ICC tournaments together and that is already more than what they deserved  considering they've won nothing for a decade.

Shaw? Of all people, I'd think you'd pick Shaw over somebody like Gill for T20s. Gill could work in places like Aus/SAF but we need a dynamic opener elsewhere.

Unfortunately, some of these "experienced" cricketers can be considered equivalent of cricketing mafia with connections & hired PR that identify and sacrifice new/fringe cricketers before anything can happen to them.

BCCI needs to step up to create a phase out plan.

@zen this thread is for all the formats. Even Tests. Hence the mention of Pujara, Vihari, Ishant etc..

Our red ball team is going to look a whole lot different come June 2025 (when final of the third WTC edition will be played). I don't follow Ranji and other red ball domestic games so I'd love if posters who follow can name a few potential red ball replacements @express bowling @Mosher @Ankit_sharma03

Gill is constantly improving and could play the role where others can also play around him ... Shaw is good too (among my favorites) but his fielding needs to improve. There is Samson, who is to be followed by a floating batting order of stroke makers, to do that role. Of course, if someone like Shaw is in great form he can be considered too which is why I have Samson or equivalent.

T20 World Cup - 2024 (WI & USA)

Champions Trophy - 2025 (Pakistan)

T20 World Cup - 2026 (India & Sri Lanka)

ODI World Cup - 2027 (South Africa, Zimbabwe)

T20 World Cup - 2028 (Australia and NZ)

Champions Trophy - 2029 (India)

T20 World Cup - 2030 (England)

If you add in the WTC finals as well, there will be 10 ICC events in total during this time period and the aim should be to win at least 4 of them if not more.

Post 2023 World Cup:

I believe that most the current players will be in test side until 2025 WTC Final so not sure what the Test Team will be.

ODI/ T20 Team:

Shaw

KL

Gill

Pant

Samson

Pandya

D Chahar

Axar

Bishnoi

Bumrah

Arshdeep

KL and D Chahar will be oldest at 31.

It is too much to expect from selectors, team management, coach.

If they were so intelligent the process would have started already.

They still are selecting Dhawan,Bhubaneshwar, Karthik,Ashwin, against weak teams.

Virat,Kohli.have great marketing potential which the younger players can't have ,so for the next 3,4 years the seniors are not going anywhere.

They will not be phased out, they would retire when they feel they want to retire

For red ball these are some potential replacements,

Top order batsman - Gill, Shaw, Jaiswal, Dhull

Middle order - Sarfaraz, Rinku

Wk - Het Patel seems to be good backup for Pant.

AR - Hangargekar, Bawa

Fast Bowlers - Sen, Umran, Prasidh, Tyagi, Mavi, Nagarkoti, Sushant, Mohsin good pool of fast bowlers.

Spinners - Haven't followed any spinners. Sai Kishore?

In Spinners front Kuldeep Yadav is just 28, so he can be around 5-6 years. Sai Kishore is good and I will back Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Markande as well to do well in Red ball.

Limited formats Axar and Washy will continue for quite some time, both are young.

If india wants to be a powerhouse  going forward , there should be urgent re vamp of coaching staff and intese coaching in skill up  in below areas --

1.  Make a pool of fast bowling talents by having a renowned fast bowling coach/coaches . Do not know what hapopened to the project of Troy cooley coaching young fast bowlers ? So disappointed with Ganguly , hardly seen any project to improve  weak areas of indian cricket.

2. Fitness , Fileding -India has gone down a lot in this area. Just look at Sarfraz & Mulani in Duleep Trophy. These are considered prospect India players in mid 20s. Look at the pot bellies of these guys .

3. Clearly identify players for Tests & 50 overs  and for T20  and communicate the same with those players , so that players are also clear about the plan they should follow to be in India team.  Allow Long format players to get better against Swing , get them playing in NZ, Eng at any level but get them play there.  Allow few of India  newcomers picked for T20 to play in some other T20 leagues to improve.

4.Too mach favouritism being done in coach selections. This should be done on merit. Review performance of fielding coach , batting coach ,bowling coach . I bet the current India coaches of all these 3 area are useless .

All 3 do not deserve to be india team coaches .

Proof - Did we see any improvement in our regular players , in fact the standard is horrible add to it poor fitness .Is there any improvement in new pacers ? Any new skill they have mastered ?  Did any of the batters have overcome their batting weaknesses  -Eg.  Iyer, Failure against Left arm pacers, consistency of some of the players . Whatever change we see seems mostly due to individual effort  before coming into india team.

5. Long term vision in selections .  Current selectors just go by useless scores in India where due to 32 teams in domestic , the quality has gone down a lot.  Eg. Current N E team .  Such a crap team and what scores & wickets against them mean ?

6.We see great improvement in Short format spinners of all contries except India .  Why can't use services of some known coaches who have achievesd success for short format  like Vittori, Even Sriram has done better with Zampa & Agar to be effective in short format.
