I like Kuldeep a lot.

But still want 2 pacers to play as reverse swing plays a vital part on many slow and abrasive pitches.

Always pace is a must. 3 is overkill but 2 is a must. Hesitant to have kuldeep over axar only cause our batting is so weak. We have to compensate for it. Ideally I would love kulldeep at 9.

Hopefully Rahul gets dropped and Gill gets to play. How many chances should Rahul be given? Averaging 36 after 45 tests is a travesty given the depth of batting talent India possesses.

The time to bench Rahul was Nagpur - now after giving him one innings, its difficult to see him not get at least one more test.

My take on KL is that when he's 'down' on confidence, he takes forever to climb out of it.  So giving him another test here, or 2, is not really going to help.  His mental slumps are something that go on for prolonged periods.

Agreed, I think with Shreyas Iyer joining the squad, SKY will drop out and Iyer will come back in for the second Test.

What we need to ensure with Gill is to not repeat what we did with Rohit, in that we kept Rohit on the sidelines because he could never nail a place down in the middle order in Tests, and in the process killed off a good part of his Test career until he moved up to open in Tests.

If Gill can open in Tests, then we should absolutely let him open the innings with Rohit and not try to shoehorn him as a Kohli replacement in the squad. Gill showed he can open in Australia, and he can definitely open the innings in India.

Gills game is more suited to the middle order than opening imo.

Interesting debate, I dont disagree with your logic here.

I just question if we are really getting the most out of a 2nd pacer and history suggests vs Eng and SA at home, that the 2nd pacer has rarely been used.

Siraj bowled just 8 overs for the game and took 1 wicket and scored 1 run. I think if we had Kuldeep we would have got more wickets and also got a better batsman.

The discussion is interesting because it would make India stronger assuming of course its a slow low turner from ball 1.

yep, we shouldn't try to shoehorn him into opening.  He's a perfect #3 batsman across formats - I know he scored that 200 in the ODI, but he's an anchor.  I'd rather have him at #3 once Virat is done, and have a guy like Prithvi Shaw opening for India in whiteball (maybe even tests) along with a left-hander.

Issue is if Shami breaks down we wil have to use kohli as we have no pace bowlers.. whatever said and done we still havent found gangulys replacement. Azhar had the luxury of playing 3 spinners 7 frontline batsmen and one pacer due to ganguly..and on top of it he had tendulkar bowling spin ( actually he won us the eden test by breaking open the match on last day).. so we need to have 2 pace bowlers..

If I had to chose just one bowler, I probably take SIraj truth be told.

If the wicket is low, slow turner from ball 1, it wont matter if our pace bowlers break down, it will irrelevant bowling them.

Having two pace bowlers is just a waste of resources if the wicket is turning from ball 1.

I would even argue its poor captaincy to not open the bowling with Ashwin, given its Warner and Usman, making having two pace bowlers irrelevant.

Its not going to happen so my point is moot, but it should happen.

So Iyer is fit after all,no reason he shouldnt play in Delhi.

Iyer for SKY most likely.

Imagine if SKY scored well like a solid 70+ score, imagine the stupidity and madness of Indian Cricket as they would drop SKY and keep KL.

I mentioned before, that one innings was telling however.

If he got out cheaply after only facing a few balls, I could even understand TM keeping him, just because that would be unlucky.

He batted for so long and yet struggled to score any runs. Yet our bowlers out batted him in every regard bar Siraj.

@express bowling would you drop Axar for Kuldeep?

As that appears the only possible selection given the mathematical formula of selecting the Indian XI.

That is, KL Kohli and Pujara can NOT be dropped.

SKY can only be replaced by Iyer.

Gill can only come in for an injury to a batsman.

India must pick two pace bowlers.

I am strongly in favour of choosing the  No. 9, 10 and 11 slots based on their bowling ability.

So I would choose Kuldeep over Axar.

Axar is being picked  ( in addition to the first choice SLA Jadeja )  to cover for the expected batting failures of Pujara and Kohli ... and this is a wrong way to pick a team.

Hey man. What would you say was a better pace attack and which is the best from Asia?

1) bumrah shami ishant/umesh

2) Waqar wasim shoaib

3) zak khan sreesanth and rp Singh (underrated attack for certain conditions)

4) imran sarfraz and whatever tullah they had

5) umesh bhoobi ishant

6) vaas Fernando dhamika

7) shaheen shah naseem and mo wasim

I would say number 1 and 2 are in order

3 and 4 are actually debatable. Rest are in random order.

Indian pace attack of 2015-2021 and still going is the best attack of Asia in all time rankings

Issue is if we had Pant a bonafide game changer we would have chosen kuldeep. Bharat doesnt inspire confidence. The last 5 will be bharat ashwin kuldeep siraj shami. Pretty fragile..

I mean, Axar's bowling record in tests is not too shabby either.  But I hear you.
