Can Cheteshwar Pujara save this test match by playing a 300 ball marathon inning?

Maybe 600 balls as Pujara can block 5 balls and then take a single off the last ball. Per my advanced calculator, it comes to 120 overs * 5 = 600 balls.

After all, only Pujara is supposed to be batting for India :dontknow:

it might be interesting to know which 100+ score in tests had a batter play the highest fraction of all balls bowled by the opposition

Might be Hanif from the top of the mind recall (though I am not sure if balls were accounted for in that period. Mostly the innings were measured in terms of time like a 100 in 300 mins, etc.)

yeah, good point. one of the great match saving knocks of that era, and future eras too (although the attack wasn't super strong at that time)

As for Pujara, I think he has done enough in his prime already by surmounting Aus in Aus in 2018 to make India win after 71 years (In that series, he failed at Perth and Ind lost the game). It is like Hillary & Norgay's first climb to the Mt. Everest. Followed that up in 2021 as well by being the most consistent batsman (scored 3 50s in 4 innings and enough has been written about the body blows in media) in the last two tests, which India drew and won respectively to clinch another series (a result of confidence from the last series as well as there now was the belief that Aus in Aus could be conquered).

Absolute legend.

Cricbuzz commentary bashing Pujara in full flow:-

Now, now, this is utterly un-Pujara like shot and he's put his team in a hole. Banged in short and just outside off, Pujara was arching back and then tried to play the cute little ramp at the very last moment. A moment of madness and all he managed was a faint edge through to the keeper. Not sure the dressing room will be happy with what they've just seen. Pujara, the wall, falling while attempting a T20 shot is the very last of what they'd have thought about

Lol what a stupid shot from Pujara to get out. Being Overambitious when it was not required to be??

That shot was nothing more than a poor shambolic version of SRT's upper cut in his days.

SRT was good at upper cut, especially in his pmop

for a tuk tuk batsman that's pathetic. No tuk tuk when required

it is enough to ensure his selection for next 1 year

It was not a bad 27 to be honest. arguably better than gill's two knocks in this match. All the top order (incl Gill) has been bad

Ind needs the Count till the series in SA as to pull off any heroic series win, Ind has had to usually rely on his contributions.

If he fails, it is no big deal, as Ind would have lost it anyways.
