Mohit Sharma for T20IS and Mukesh Kumar for tests, The Right Choice?

Recommended Posts

Reports say that for the WI tests Mukesh Kumar will replace Umesh Yadav.

Mukesh Kumar is almost 30. Is he the future of Indian bowling? Why is Unadkat being selected at 32?

Also Mohit Sharma will return to Indian team after 8 years. A 35 year old for T20IS.

What are the selectors thinking?

This is the time to blood in young bowlers like Arshdeep or Umran and give them a whole tour.

But the selectors are failing in selection as they failed as players.

Arshdeep and Umran have been disappointing in IPL. They need to improve their game (or they can get slaughtered further to lose confidence or not even considered for a long time).

In the past, I used to back these new bowlers but they appear to lose steam in a season or two. At times, even appearing as if they have forgotten to bowl.

Should we back 23 year old tearaway and 23 year old left arm swinger or 30 year old dibbly dobler and 35 year old slower ball specialist?

We need ......

Tall, hit the deck quicks.

We don't need .....

Short medium.pacers, especially if they are floaty.

Why  ????

Short pacers hit the sweet spot of the bat ... especially so if the are floaty ( even if they are tall )

While tall, hit the deck pacers hit the splice of the bat.

Most Indians don't understand this basic thing.  Which is why we may get Mukesh Kumar and Mohit Sharma.

Indian cricket will remain mediocre with low IQ people selecting squads and teams.

Bring youngsters in when they are in some sort of form and confidence or their failures become an excuse to rule them out for a long time.

In India, there are many youngsters so the teams needs to back the right set of players to avoid turning selections into a musical chair which can harm both the team and the players more.

First preference should be to back the best or second best 23 years old (from your example) player if he is ready. If you bring in 3rd or 4th best option, a team needs to give that option a run as well which can set the rebuilding timeline back.

In the absence of the above, the team is likely to bring in someone with some experience so less learning curve (a 30 year old in your example) who can do the job in the limited timeframe I.e. someone in form but who can be replaced when the right candidate becomes available (the team can use this to keep a placeholder of an out of form player as well).

The 35 year old is an exception. That selection would depend on some great current form that deserves a look in.

Arshdeep and Umran are not that great either.  Umran atleast can become good if he goes back to his full pace and reasonable accuracy. Arshdeep will remain a low ceiling bowler as long as he remains floaty.

We need to look for tall, hit the deck quicks like Harshit, Sen, Tyagi, Prasidh and Mohsin.  Shorter pacers can play only if they are exceptional like Bumrah.
