There is a middle ground they can push for. May be they are worried about going back to their old methods and getting stuck there in trying to achieve their balance. England could have totally outbatted Australia out of this match. If India had done this all hell would have broken loose. Michael Clarke long before has done this kind of declarations. But generally he does after 400 plus and they had a gun and fit bowling unit. Australia is known for these kind of declarations. England never was. Let us cast our memory back to 1987 test. Australia declared in both innings in the interest of producing a result. In 2000s Adam Gilchrist made an ultra sporting declaration leaving 315 for ENgland to win. And England won.
