We will keep losing crucial ODI's as long as we play 2 frontline spinners/spin allrounders

Recommended Posts

It's not clear why the dunces that are selectors and the TM don't realise that extra spinners don't work in modern ODI's.  There is literally not a single country(SL is the exception) where spin works better than pace as far as ODI's are concerned.

There are issues with the quality of players being played no doubt. But the combination is extremely idiotic too.

This is an era of 2 new balls and flat pitches. Spinners can get carted at any given time.

1.CT final vs Pakistan.

In a previous match vs SL at the same venue,   Dhoni, Yuvraj and Dhawan stank up the joint between themselves. They scored 35 runs in 57 odd balls between the 29-39 over period and killed whatever momentum that innings had resulting in a total of 322 .

Jadeja got smashed the most by Mendis after a good start by Indian quicks and didn't complete his quota. Result: We drop a seamer and add the extra spinner at the Oval and get smashed by Pakistan.

2018/19 Australia tour of India

Kuldeep, Chahal, and Jadeja get smashed in at least 1 game after the Aussies started picking the spinners and we lost after being 2-0 up

2019 World Cup

Australia gave away 352 odd due to some poor bowling and Warner was rusty but they still looked good to chase and it was the quicks who struck for us and they didn't look troubled against spin whatsoever.

Pakistan lost two wickets to part-time seamer Vijay Shankar while they were belting Chahal all over.

England belted Chahal and Kuldeep while Bumrah kept it tight, Shami took wickets and Pandya did not get a wicket thanks to Dhnomi's poor DRS decision

New Zealand struggled against Bumrah and Bhuvaneshwar but Chahal got whacked. Extra seamer missed again

2019/ 2020 tour of NZ

2 spinners + Shardul Thakur as 3rd seamer and we lost 3- 0 with Jadeja batting at 75 strike rate to ensure we lost a chasable total as well.

England tour of India 2020/21

Kuldeep and Krunal got smashed in the first 2 ODIs. In the final ODI , we had 5 seam options and would have won comfortably if not for dropped catches but Krunal continued to be useless with ball and was a liability with the bat as well striking at 73.

New Zealand tour of India 2022/23

Nearly lost the 1st ODI with Sundar, Pandya and Thakur(both are 4th seamers) getting smashed.

Australia tour of India 2022/23

In the decider in Chennai, Axar got smashed for 35 runs in his last 3 overs . He also got smashed in the over he bowled in the PP. Once again, if we had a 3rd quick , we would not have had to introduce him in the PP in the first place.

We ended up losing by 20 runs.

This is NOT  to say that we don't need better personnel in both batting and bowling.

The point is that we need 3 frontline quicks in every ODI of consequence that we play. Shardul and Pandya don't count. They are selected for their hitting as well.  There should be no compromise on 3 quicks no matter what the conditions.

On an extraordinarily spinning pitch, we can play for eg.  - Axar, Kuldeep, Bumrah, Siraj, Prasidh(no more than 2 spin options)

On a pitch where you need batting depth you can play -  Axar, Pandya, Bumrah, Siraj, Prasidh

On a normal pitch -  Pandya, Bumrah, Siraj, Prasidh, Kuldeep or Axar, Bumrah, Siraj, Prasidh, Shami

On a rare seaming pitch - Pandya, Shami, Siraj, Prasidh, Bumrah

The 6th bowling option HAS to be a batsman who bowls a bit of spin.

Most things said on Internet forums are pointless. Should we ban forums then?

You missed the point of my post … And possibly only a handful of folks rate Ind as overwhelming favorites.

Completely agree.

Kuldeep should be the only spinning option unless the wicket is a raging turner. No need to play even Jadeja at 7 just because of his mythical all round ability which is non existent in white ball cricket. If Pandya is having a bad day, finish the overs with Kohli or Iyer or some of other part timer.

We can't waste a valuable extra batting spot on him or Axar.

We can have someone like Parag/Tewatia who are hitters and can bowl if needed.

Kohli/Iyer are not regular bowlers

Yes of course. I mentioned the worse case scenario of using part timers instead of wasting a spot for bowling all rounders who aren't even good bowlers to begin with.

Bumrah

Siraj

Pandya

Kuldeep

Jadeja

Shardul

That will be the bowling in the XI. Can we win with this attack ??

Shami will be there instead of shardul.

Looking at this TM's love for chahal, we might see him play ahead of Siraj lol.

Kuldeep should always have been ahead of behaal in LO & to a lesser extent the likes of Ashwin away. But looking at the way he's been treated over the years I'm 99.99% sure the "seniors" have a *ing grudge against him :hitler:

they probably can't read his bowling :phehe:
