What it takes to be a fast bowler--Data Collection and Analysis from Australia

Recommended Posts

Absolutely brilliant.  This is not analysis overload. This is par for the course.

This is how sports science is used to construct world class teams.

It all starts with identifying the bowlers to invest  - raw talent/twitch fibres etc.

We don't even get that part right.

The last bit was most illuminating. The physical performance data is used to eliminate the issues surrounding fatigue , strength and recovery etc.

If that is eliminated , only then do the biomechanics of the action are looked at to see if they need tweaking

Probability of success is directly proportional to investing in and sticking to the right processes.

They have managed to tape together a world class attack for a decade and across all 3 formats .

Kudos to OZ.

You need to have talent to begin first. Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins trio is one of the best fast bowling trios in cricket history.

We have not found replacement for Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma. Both of them are not even great.

Some geniuses here were gloating on how India is full of express fast bowlers.

Prasidh Krishna was wonderful, we all saw how he bullied SA.

Analysis comes later.

We have the express & fast bowlers, so that criteria is ticked.

What comes next is the development & exposure of those fast bowlers. Yes, Prasidh was a setback, but that shouldn't stop us in exploring the faster bowlers. Hire a proper bowling coach who can understand nuances of fast bowling and help them improve.

Someone like Ishant Sharma who debuted in 2008, for ages he was bowling with incorrect wrist position and none of our desi bowling coaches took any step to improve on it. Few months with Gillespie and we got Ishant Sharma 2.0. Even Zak became the Zak only after playing county in England...

We also have trio of Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, who are as good as (if not better) than the trio of Australia.

I was talking about the next crop of fast bowlers. If Bumrah is injured , we don't have anyone to replace.

BTW I don't think Siraj is anywhere near the caliber of other five bowlers. He has his moments but he is very hot and cold.More cold than hot.

Who are in the express categories.Guys like Umran or even Prasidh have been given all the tools. Players also need to have the zeal to improve or stay fit.Injuries are unfortunate but we have to accept fast bowlers tend to get injured.

Even in country like Australia for last ten years, these three are playing the most important matches.I understand finding  great fast bowlers is not easy job.

Ishant, Zak or Umesh would not fall into great fast bowlers category. Ishant was serviceable as he played for India and Indian team did not have any options,

Express : Tyagi, Umran, Mayank

Umran tbh don't have bad stats in T20's..out of the 8 matches he has played in 5 he has bowled well.

Tyagi was pick of the bowler in UPT20 league, gotten 2 double hattrick despite playing only 5 matches. Even took a 6 fer. Then in Vijay Hazare picked up 9 wickets in 5 games (despite bowling only as the first and sometimes as second change bowler).

Mayank was bowling as second change for Delhi, but still he was economical and picked up wickets in both SMAT & VHT.

They are 24,23 & 22 years old respectively...right time to get them under a serious bowling coach and develop a fast bowling backup.

the fast bolwers pool shoild be identified an dtheir workload should be managed even at domestics using these technolgy\analysis..we are seeing these promising bowlers like Sen,Rana,Mayank getting injured often..albeit not fast bolwers but add glass men like Chahar and Sundar ..

even the likes of ..Bumrah,Pandya and prasidh..they all could have benefitted from it and reduce chances of injuries that happened.

How close are they for playing. Tyagi should have been playing for India in all three formats. Tyagi  is one guy I have such high hopes, hope he is not lost and he can still play all three formats for long time.

See our bowlers I feel like Shami did not value the efforts of bowling coach like Bharat Arun. It was under Arun India fast bowling blossomed. Now that Arun is being asked to coach SL team.

Umran , IMO  has to do more, it falls on his shoulders too , he fell out of rotation even for his IPL team.Tyagi we can give him excuse as he is coming out of injury.

BTW IMO Dravid and Rohit have no idea on how to handle fast bowlers.

Agree on your point that our current TM has no idea on how to handle fast bowlers.

They ask a short height bowler (Umran) to bowl back of length ignoring the fact that his USP is fast full length deliveries and has a decent yorker, bumpers should only be used as a surprise weapon.

Umran as per what I have seen needs senior bowlers to guide him what to do next, that's where the experience of Shami & Bumrah should come in handy.

Both Zak & Nehra has often attributed how Srinath helped them in their younger days, later Zak became mentor for the young bowlers. Bumrah has many times mentioned how Malinga has helped him in his initial days. Such knowledge and guidance is gold and once Shami will retire then we will lose that on the field.
