Indian team management vexed at cricketers' Ranji Trophy reluctancy: 'In Hardik Pandya's case…'

"The decision makers in BCCI are well aware that some players don't want to play any red ball cricket. If they are out of Indian team, they would at best play a few Mushtaq Ali T20 games and then not report for state team duty during red ball season," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "To rein in such players, board in all likelihood will make it mandatory to play 3-4 Ranji Trophy games, failing which, they can't play IPL or even appear in IPL auction if released by their franchise. The state units feel unless the diktat comes from top of BCCI, some of the young stars will treat Ranji Trophy with disdain."

Lol, when you incentivize them to do so why be surprised.

This 'wake up' by BCCI after a long time is stupid and pointless- they for many years have been prioritising IPL and pampering its superstars to do what the hell they want. Of there are white ball players who play for India who arent in the scheme for tests then why force them to play Ranji. But stupid selections of Ishan and Sky for tests when they themselves dont want to play red ball cricket is mind boggling. When did they even last play white ball cricket for their states?

The only players that need to be forced to play Ranji are multi format players who are set in the Test team- if there aren't any leagues or not injured why are they NOT playing Ranji? But when BCCI is influence by rich IPL owner Lobbies and players wanting to ensure the cash cow created by BCCI itself is something they will always play at the expense of India matches then what moral ground does BCCI have here?

Skipping Ranji has been a thing for established players since as far back as Azhar's time, way before IPL was even a figment of imagination. Why would anyone in today's era toil in Ranji? They have IPL to save themselves for.

This the exact rotten attitude that means as a country we cant become the best red ball team in international matches.

If IPL is the cash cow then why bother having a red ball structure? just withdraw from playing tests and say we only play white ball cricket and expand IPL for 8-9 months with 10 teams. Atleast the upfront honesty by BCCI will put fans mind at ease about where the priorities of board and players lie. The perceived importance to Tests BCCI portrays is just a farce if they are not interested in improving the quality of their red ball domestic tournament which is meant to produce the next gen Test players for India. When selections for Tests are based on IPL and white ball performances then why is this drama called Ranji going on?

It's not my personal belief, I am just calling out the prevalent attitude among players and administrators.

Why because, you are still getting players like Sarfraz.Pujara played Ranji all thru his career.

You are also getting so called great keeper in Bharat.

Did you not see the above? I have said multiple times the quality of Ranji as it is does not produce international ready players who can do well in Tests- because BCCi priority is IPL it is not taking concrete steps to improve the quality of ranji and the red ball skill of its centrally contracted players then all they say in public is BS.

If you dont financially incentivise a player to focus on red ball cricket while also improving pitches etc so obv their motive is going to be about bagging a IPL contract and not being th3 best all condition red ball player which requires commitment, focus and the desire to essentially not play the IPL sometimes. Rahane and Pujara did that only because they are nearing the end of their careers- seeing what Pandya and Ishans attitude is towards red ball cricket, it shows this attitude is very much prevalent in the younger generation of players

You are forgetting one thing, India with sheer numbers will always have players like Pujara or Sarfraz who might not be good enough to play IPL.

IMO you don't need to incentivize anyone in India atleast.

I don't blame Pandya for not playing Ranji, he knows his body well and understands it cannot withstand the rigors of red ball cricket.

The problem he is not playing any LIST A either. So why is he being rewarded.

Kishan's case is different, I strongly feel has problem with TM. He knows Dravid will screw him over and over again. First he drops him after he scores double hundred in odis.

Second he drops him from being main WK in tests in WI only to find Rahul becoming number one keeper in SA without a single test being played in between. And then there is Bharat who plays tests over him.

If such blatant favoritism is happening , what can any young player do.

How does Rahul become test WK in SA without playing any FC cricket. Did Dravid address it.Kishen has to go back and play Ranji to be selected as WK.

Kishan is being forced to play and prove his worth in ranji whereas Dandya is getting red carpet welcome at the inaguration ceremony of gandhinagar premier league (after being off the field for 4 months).   Why this blatant double standard by bcci?

Because he's sacred reincarnation of Sir Garfield

Will Virat play Ranji after taking a break or rules are different for him.

Would Virat have taken break during the ipl.

Will Rahul ,Jadeja,Iyer be directly selected in next test series based on IPL perfomance

I think that is where BCCI should step in and put rules in place.Injured players should play atleast one FC /LIST A before being considered for Indian teams.

Problem may arise with scheduling. But if that can be  sorted out, it will be win win for everyone. Big name players have to play FC/ListA which will increase the interest in domestic matches also.

Pandua neither can play Odis regularly huge chances of him breaking down and ditching India in middle nor can he dream of playing red ball ever again

But him getting special treatment is just laughable,a clever board will always try to create someone like for like to lower the stakes of an individual oozing in being the only seaming AR
