VVS Laxman never played an ODI world cup game

Lost the final at the toss. Batting first we may still have lost but contest would have been tight.

Don't remember us chasing successfully against Aussies even once in ODIs from 1998 (Desert Storm) to 2007 (Murali Karthik MOTM game). All our wins against them in that 9-10 years period came batting first. They beat us in a TVS triseries final with bowling attack of Bracken, Brad Williams, Bichel, Clarke etc.

That tvs final was a disgrace. We couldn't chase 239.

300 could've been chased if SRT stayed till 30th over & we had wickets in hand, but that was not to be. Our best bet would've always been to bat first but SCG chickened out seeing how we only mange 125 in the first game vs Oz :whack3:

Ganguly chased because in the group stages we batted first and got bowled out for 125 and there was rain predicted in the final.

That is easier said than done. Chasing that huge total has never been done in any knockout match.353 was playing role of two bowlers for Australia.

That is why they should  have batted first. They could have easily scored 300 against that bowling.

What easily? We only scored 125 batting first in the group stages lol

Australian bowling was weak in 2003 finals.

India was scoring at 6 RPO against them till 40th over.

They had to play out McGrath and bash others.

That bowling was not weak. The most anyone scored against them chasing was India in the final LOL.

Lanka couldn't chase 212 and got bundled out for 123 against them.

NZ couldn't chase 208 and got bundled out for 112 against them.

Imagine thinking a bowling lineup of lee and McGrath is weak.

Will never forget the final. Watched the whole first innings massacre. Went to sleep cause it was 4 or 5 am in the states. Woke up and saw india was 95-3.

Current T20 age of power batting has made people take those bowling lineups lightly

no we should have batted first.

Yep, you should always bat first in big finals. Unless it's a completely doctored pitch like in 2023 world cup final. Chasing in a big final is something which is immensely difficult

Against a meme level bowling attack.

Bracken was quality (underrated if you ask me) but rest of the bowling attack read: Brad Williams, Bichel, Ian Harvey, Clarke, Symonds. They didn't even have a proper spinner like Hogg in the XI. Ian Harvey 4/20, that guy was a joke.

Their batting was full strength though (2003 WC winning combo), restricting them to 235 was a great job by bowlers, handed the match on a platter to our batters.

2003 WC F was the second biggest * up by our captain, first will be 2017 CT F, a day game against poyzzz who we had trounced by 130 runs in group game with Umesh doing max damage

We were terrible in finals in the Ganguly era, lost 13-14 finals, or some stat like that, mostly against Aussies and Lankans. But also against NZ in Zimbabwe tri series, 2000 CT, against RSA couple of times.....

Natwest final was the only win IIRC, hence the hype.

2002 CT final was no guaranteed win for us, if you remember 2004 Asia Cup final against Lanka (same venue) where we messed up a 220 chase. Murali, Upul Chandana, Jayasuriya used to strangle us in middle overs before Dhoni's arrival series.

Bring back tri series, quadrangulars etc.

Imagine double round robin featuring India, Aus, RSA, Eng/NZ in peak Indian home season. Followed by a best of 3 finals and best of 3 bronze medal match, maza aa jayega.

4-159 with 80 required in 16 overs was reasonable, but Indian tail was too long.

Also bowling was disgraceful on that pitch. Indian bowling used to become absolutely toothless in middle overs.

That's why lineups of 2000s were overrated.

It was the difficult pitch.

Same batting attack had thrashed them few days back with Ponting hitting 7 sixes and 1 four IIRC bringing back 2003 WC final memory.

Even on that difficult track Indian bowlers were simply not able to pick wickets. They restricted runs only.

That was feature of Indian ODI bowling in mid 2000s, bowl at 4-5 RPO but going wicketless mostly.

We lost to WI of all sides in a triseries final in Zim

I couldn't believe even that time how did we loose to WI

WI were trash even then,it was just we were even more trash in finals

The famed and overrated lineup we had in that period to 2010/11 were rabbits in slightest of pressure

Aus bowling attack was halwa though, didn't even play a proper spinner, dew factor was also to our advantage (same venue a year later Pak easily chased 300 down). Our famed batting lineup should have done better.

Except early to mid 80s, and skipper Dhoni's initial 6-7 years, our white ball teams have always been mental midgets.

It was different pitch and venue and that factored into Ganguly opting to bowl first which was wrong call.

Jason Gillespie was also out injured?Aussies had two bowlers Lee and Mcgrath.

2017 bowling first was not wrong call at all. SL chased 321 with utmost ease with Umesh,Bumrah and Bhuvi in the line up on the same Oval ground.
