VVS Laxman never played an ODI world cup game

He had a career of 16 years in which we had 3 ODI world cups. He was one of the clutchest players ever. Had legendary test innings.  Yet Indian team knew the difference between formats and didnt carry him to world cups.

Today we want to make Sky a test player and Pant and Rahul T20 players. No clear thinking or strategies.

VVS was outstanding in the 2003-04 VB series in Australia, also a matchwinning 100 in decider in Pak 2004. In hindsight could have given him a few chances in 2003 WC.

Both him and Kumble were short changed by Ganguly.

Well somehow we had to play Dinesh Mongia .... for some reason.

2003-04 VVS deserved to be in the XI on merit. In the VB series later that year, he outscored Sachin, Hayden, Ponting, Sehwag, Ganguly, Yuvraj, Martyn, Clarke, Symonds, Bevan, Dravid. And at a very good SR for those days, higher than almost all the big guns of Aus/Ind.

Mongia was a rubbish selection.

They underutilized Yuvi Sehwag bowling then to compensate for Mongia

Should have been there

That was some news back then

Their fielding was a liability .. not that Ganguly was a great fielder

VVS should have played at least vs Aus in 2003 WC

Mongia was there just to bat at no 7 & chip in few overs.

Laxman can't bat at no 7, so that means Kaif, Yuvraj, David all would have to be pushed down by their places to accomodate him.

Another problem was Laxman too was a slow scorer like Ganguly & Dravid and to some extent Kaif. Hence Yuvraj would be under too much pressure to score.

Yeah no need of Mongia in that team when Sachin, Viru, Ganguly, Yuvi all could bowl.

His biggest issue was dot balls. He would hit straight to fielders ball after ball. During the desert storm innings Sachin had to do everything on his own Laxman just rotated strike. He had limitations more than Dravid. Couldn't afford to have both Dravid and Laxman. India needed a Dhoni and Raina in 2003 in place of Kaif and Mongia. We would have won.

VVS despite all limitations was in serious form in ODIs in 2003-04, he was scoring at a faster rate than Sachin, Yuvraj quite often in that period. Please never compare him to the talentless Dravid saar.

No matter who played tough to see us beating that Aus team especially chasing.

Even against ATG Ind XI I'll give a clear edge to 2003 Aus.

A total of 300+ has NEVER been chased in World cup or CT finals. A total of 250+ has been chased ONCE in CT (NZ chased 264 against us in 2000) and ONCE in World cup finals (India chased Sri Lanka's 274 in 2011).Apart from these 250+ has NEVER been chased in big finals.

The pressure of chasing in finals is something else.  No way anyone would have chased that score in 2003 final just like no way anyone could chase that score in 2017 CT final, no matter what the bowling attack was.

2017 CT total was chaseable.

Biggest blunder was deciding to chase against Pak knowing fully well they're mental midgets while chasing and it was a flat patta. In T20s I can understand deciding to chase but in ODIs, especially the finals and if there's no dew, batting first on a patta is the way to go.

Also, we should've gone with either Umesh or Shami instead of Ashwin as Pak struggle against pace. Plus we already had Jadeja and Jadhav as spin options. It was poor decision making which cost us. A total of 330+ is only chaseable if top order show up and as usual our "experienced" seniors didn't show up in a final

Agreed. There was no place for VVS in that lineup.
