Once set, he makes it count Aus-Utterly dominant. His Ashes 2019 series (774 runs at 110) was Bradmanesque. In Eng- (2010–2013)not great, but since 2015 he’s been unstoppable. His average in England is over 50, which is rare for visiting batsmen. In India-Smith, though, averages ~60 in India ,better than Tendulkar’s home average against Australia. His 2017 Pune century on a raging turner is a masterclass.(Personally besides Pieterson's 186,setting up a series win on a tough wicket, tops my list) In South Africa-Solid record, with centuries in tough conditions against Steyn, Philander, Morkel. In Sri Lanka and BD- Hasn't played much there, but he’s scored runs there too Your comment is all about Steve Smith. It does not prove Joe Root is lesser batsman. You didn't even about him even once Rondu 1
Talkie Posted December 27, 2025 Posted December 27, 2025 I don't understand how we Steve Smith the same way as we did in 2019. We was called the best since Bradman after 60 tests. After 62 tests, he averaged 62, but in last 60 tests he hasn't done anything great. He isn't even the best Australian batsman this decade. Overall, Kane, Root, Brook, Jaiswal, Pant, Mathews, De Silva have been better than him. He is closer to the likes of Conway and Babar than to Root and Kane. But somehow that does not impact his legacy. I am not criticizing him, but people downplay Root's contributions so much compared to some others. He is a different batsman this decade. Rondu 1

When both retire, it'll be interesting to compare Smiths' 2010s returns vs Root's 2020s returns, won't be surprised if they're on same level. Kids who got into cricket this decade will definitely remember Root in better light than Smith
Talkie Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Less than 2000 away now. Two hundreds in Australia now. Australia can no longer be used as an excuse. We move forward to new set of excuses, easy match, dead rubber, no cummins, etc.

And some of them are not excuses, he wouldn't have scored if Cummins was not there. I love how you just put it there as if they are somehow not valid, lmao
putrevus Posted January 5 Posted January 5 41 100s plus counting, this dominaton of Root over rest of the batsmen from 2020 is also unheard off. 24 100s for Root vs next best of 12 100s. He has completely closed chapter of Australian past failures.Unless he wants to walk away, he will score those 2000 plus runs.
goose Posted January 5 Posted January 5 in the last 24 hours root became a better batsman than ponting. amazing

Gollum Posted January 6 Posted January 6 (edited) We must be like Australia. They don't hold many individual records (esp. longevity based ones), but look what they have accomplished as a team throughout cricket history. Didnt't give a * when Anderson passed McGrath, or Murali overtaking Warne in the past. Poms are usually just as record-obsessed as Asians. Look how they extended Anderson's career mainly to get him past Aussie legends, the treatment Jaiswal gave him in Rajkot last year should have been on the spot career-ending, no way an Aussie would have survived such beizzati. Eng's greatest teams were ones that weren't individual record/milestone obsessed...their 2009-12 test team and 2016-22 white ball teams. deepdynamo Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Yes, Root with play until 2029 WTC F. That's three more years and about 25-30 Tests to get 2000 odd runs.

I disagree, Ponting played too long, so did Border.Khwaja is still playing at 39.Steve Waugh played 168 tests. Anderson passed Mcgrath in 2019 itself.Even Stuart Broad passed Mcgrath.Jimmy even now is going to be good enough in English conditions. He is a freak. Aussies got lucky in 2023 more than them being great. Yes they always play to win that is not going to change but they have been able to produce players of high quality also. It has not nothing to do with them not being obsessed with records. Root is still the best batsman by mile in his team.Him playing another 25 tests or more is not going to be due to him being obsessed with record. Cook walked away at the age of 33.
