One refreshing change in the Gautam Gambhir era is the team management’s stress on all-rounders.

While India had been struggling to fit in an extra bowler — after the five specialists in the playing XI — head coach Gambhir has been trying to include players who can bowl.

As a result, there have been at least seven bowlers in every T20I which had made things much easier.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said the team management’s effort was to “build a strong core.

“There are guys who can fill multiple roles which are so important for balance depending on where we play.

You look at someone like Riyan (Parag) who hasn’t batted much in this series.

“We’ve seen someone (Reddy) who can bat at 4-5 as well as being a finisher. So, it’s trying to fit as many of those pieces together as we can in these bilateral series.

Also they are very focussed & clear as to who are their players they should have in the team.  Samson after making 2 ducks in SL series was told  2 weeks before the BD T20 started that he will open in all the 3 matches . So communication was spot on.

Again Tilak Varma was told that he will captain emerging team well before . So he is the other one they want to be india T20 team in future.

We have to give it to this TM for such clarity in player selection. Have not seen such selections for a long long time in India.

in ODIs we still have same problem.

we can do the same in ODIs,both Kohli and Rohit are in their last tournament in champions trophy.

he can say whatever he wants but they wont last that long, heck both are on their last legs in test cricket too and one more injury is all that takes to bring retirement closer

That doesn't matter for their selection

Nitish would habe been good in this condition, batting at no 6 and his bowling will be handful in this condition.

If Gill.had niggle ,Nitish could have been added as he was in travelling reserves

It's been almost an year, where are the "allrounders" ?
By allrounders, I don't mean likes of Shardul, Nitish who are just avg/poor in both/one departments/department. We need the allrounders who are good in one and avg at the other.

Washy is the only one who is giving some hope...bowling good and batting decently, will improve. But what about Nishant Sindhu, Raj Bawa, Manav Suthar ?? Why the duck we are still stuck with Ghuseja/Phateja who is at the dawn of his career.

They only qualify as allrounders on home decks, no rounders every where else.

Wish Pandya showed interest in test cricket.
