India needs boring batsmen

These flashy stroke players with poor defensive technique are repeatedly getting exposed. I don't mind them being flashy. But your defense has to be water tight. I am strictly talking about home conditions. Jaiswal showed that in England series. Now he has picked up a few bad habits in T20. Gill wants to guts it out. But he has poor defensive technique. Peak Pujara had this trait. Besides him Murali vijay was good in home conditions. He has 9 centuries at home at avge of 47.  Both of them had this capability to bore the bowling attack into submission by being patient.  All the other stroke players should play around such boring batsmen.  Without these boring partnerships opposition would feel they are always in the game. Pujara and VIjay were involved in 7 century partnership.

Last 10 years partnership record in India

Pujara used to get abused a lot here.

Always found that funny.

Ab bhugto.

Pujara was the greatest batsman i have seen play in Asian pitches.

His body of work is immense.

Current Indians bats can only dream of the knocks he has played.

Yea.. you need someone to arrest a potential collapse right at the start.  At this point India collapses in every single innings because of these players.  The way Srilankans constructed partnership both in England and Srilanka showed how much we have regressed as a unit. Even in ODIs in Srilanka after a good start we invariably collapsed. One common factor in both ODI and Test collapse was Virat Kohli. He just could not hold middle order together.

That was only in his last 3-4 years when he lost his abilities. Abhi toh Rahane bhi chalega lol

Yes.

Not only is it a skill issue but also mentality issue.

Jaiswal and Pant are fabulous bats.

If they wanted, they could have easily won us this series.

But they chose to throw it away and there was no one else to clean up the mess.

The rest...the less said the better.

Meanwhile Pujara on his last legs...

"The pitch had variable bounce, from one end the ball was not rising much, and at times rising a bit more than what I was expecting. It was becoming very difficult to defend those balls with the bat. There was an option to defend with the bat, but I felt that was not a safe option," revealed Pujara explaining why he chose to take the body blows - 11 of them precisely from the Aus quicks, "Because if the ball hits your gloves it could go to short leg, slips, gully, or I could get caught behind. So, I wanted to rule that option out and that is why I was taking the blows to the body. Getting hit on the helmet was not ideal, but I was not worried about it and the there reason for it I knew as long as I am there and not getting out, that's fine".

---

Sometimes its all about eliminating needless risks.

Bazball and all this aggressive nautanki works as long as you play cricketing shots and know when yo attack and when to defend

Sometimes, the best way forward js to eliminate all risks.

What should have been Indias today turned into NZs day in 10 mins.

Agree about overall but that is just OTT about Pujara. Gill was creaming it at the other end and then Pant took over. It was difficult only for him.

Haha. Ab toh koi bhi chalega.

Even before he declined, you could see sooo many comments about how slow he was, how defensive he was, etc, etc.

Remember the Kohli Shastri criticism of Pujara in 2016 WI tour..

Reg intent...

Kohli Shastri werent wrong per se but that style never suited Pujara and he did it his own way.

You can't play T20 stars in Tests or this will happen

Play boring batsmen from domestic cricket. Sai Sudarshan, Baba Indrajith, Easwaran all can be tried

New zealand shows that clearly. Look at Young. He doesn't seem to be a flashy stroke player. Same with Latham. THey just buckle down and value their wicket and take chances only when they are absolutely sure it will come off. Even those sweeps are well practiced. They have a method in playing those shots. First line of defense bat then the glove. THey somehow manage to connect by timing it. These things come only with practice. You cannot directly practice at the center. Since there are 4 subcontinent tours they have to make they come well prepared.  On the other hand our team neither get prepared for overseas tour nor for home games.

I am talking in general.

Not this match.

Pujaras body of work on all kinds of turners in Asia is immense.

No one from this era comes close.

Can't think of a more boring player than KL honestly

If you are going to choke it doesn't matter how boring he is. Look at the ridiculous way he got out in the first test. Strangle down. I believe twice like that. These things can be done only by this guy.

Yep I agree with that though it declined after his knees gave up.

That was the sad part.

Or else his legacy would have been something else.

Prime Smith...prime Pujara are a different breed of batsmen.

Stats (as good as they may be) dont do justice to their true impact.

No, we need competent batsmen. Jaiswal is not boring and I'll pick him anyday. Our problem is we're sticking with has beens in Kohli and Rohit. When 2 of your top 4 are walking wickets, you're bound to struggle.

Get in likes of Sai Sudarshan, Rinku and Jurel, and you would be fine. It's selectors and BCCI's fault for not considering performances and letting has beens stay in the team in the name of "experience".

Smith had great survival instincts at his peak. If he decides not to get out he could do. Bit like how Collingwood did .

This. A 100 times this.

Often on message boards, criticism of a player during their waning years is taken as an insult of the player's overall contribution. It's not. E.g., VK was a beast 8 yrs ago. That can never be recreated. He is in his waning years now but is hanging around taking a place that can be used to build the future. That deserves criticism.

We can't bring them back. But we have to look for players in similar mould.  Someone who can drop anchor right at the top. Instead of finding a reliable no.3 we used the worst choice possible in the first Test which was Virat kohli.
