The reason is they're expecting him to play all 5 tests in BGT , followed immediately by another 2 in sri lanka. They don't want him to overextend himself in ODI's.

Pakistan were bilateral kings way before this, particularly in ODIs. Babar Afridi, etc got super hyped based on these bilaterals where most countries don't even play their best players. They also rise in rankings because of bilaterals. 

 

The hype starts and then ICC tournament comes where teams play their best players and these guys are brought back to earth 

 

This cycle has been happening for a long time now.

When did they win bilaterals. This win in Aus came after 22 years. Don't remember last time they won series in SEN too.
