He's a good guy but needs to feel appreciated. There is no big series in India now for some time and whether we will even pick him for Wtc final if we end up playing it is a question mark. I think had we qualified for WTC final...Ashwin may have stayed. Since it's likely that we will tank...he might not have seen any incentive to keep on playing. Plus Washy is around 24-25 and entering his prime years like Ashwin did when he debuted.

Its natural that offies will struggle in few nations. Murali avg 75 in Australia..avg 45 vs India despite playing on "spin friendly" pitches. Anyway his non inclusion overseas was more due to Jadeja's batting & fielding ability. Had Ashwin played with any other spinner who wasnt as good with bat as Jadeja..he would have been a sure shot lock in for overseas tests.

Murali was unlucky he didn't tour India with "King" Kohli and "Hitman" Sharma the mainstays of our batting. He would've averaged below 10 against these tools. They made Chapman, Aijaz and Santner look like second coming of Warne singhvivek141 1
putrevus Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Ashwin got test captaincy instead of Rohit. The Dark Horse 1

Though I think Pant & Jaiswal would have played him well.

Probably Murali would've brought this average to 1 and 3 At this point the team would be better served replacing them with bowlers. At least we'll be able to put more pressure on Aussie batters.

I don't think so.Kohli has highest avg in India even after his struggles for more than five years. He still has better avg than Sachin, Dravid and master of spin bowling Sehwag in India. He would done just fine against any spin bowler in India or away before 2019. These are pitches where Ashwin and Jade avg in low 20s.Unlike Kumble or Bhajji who bowled on lot more flatter wickets and avg lot more in India.Lot of times India has played on Bunsen burner in last decade. Those have ruined batsmen and given other teams inferior spinners a chance to win matches. Think Kohli averaged in 60s or 70s at home (higher than Pujara) before pandemic. And Rohit is one of the best even on square turners. The current version of RoKo, sure you have a point.

Averaged 100+ against spin in some of the years, I vividly remember those stats being pulled up, especially since he averaged more than even Pujara who was ace against spin.

It's not just the recent version though. We're seeing these versions for more than 5 years now. At this point their peak, especially in Kohli's case, was more like a purple patch and what we're seeing right is now the majority of the career.

Yes man, this long drought is inexplicible in Kohli's case. Surely age fudging, that too not just by 2-3 years but good old Pakistan/Afghanistan style fudging.

Kohli's case is baffling to me, he has struggled in what are supposed to be his peak years. Now he has become so afraid to play his shots. All his dismissals in this series also show mental judgment errors. There is no flow to his innings anymore. He is completely circumspect. He looks lost. Is it age fudging, other than that I don't see any sane reason why batsman of his class has become so useless. Last time I saw Kohli play was his type of innings before 36 all out where he was run out. Edited December 19, 2024 by putrevus Gollum 1
goose Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 kohli has had some great knocks in test cricket, particularly down under. but my abiding memory of him will be somone who nailed limited overs chasing. he combined obvious batting skill with mental strength to chase down totals again and again culminating in his finest moment in the mohali semi-final. the hope was he'd translate that to test cricket. such a shame it never happened.
Gollum Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 (edited) Among post 2010 mainstays, think only Dhoni, Ashwin, Saha, Vijay, Dhawan have officially retired. Umesh, Ishant, Pujara, Rahane and @Lord's favorite Bhuvi haven't, right? Edited December 19, 2024 by Gollum

Should have continued his momentum by playing Eng series at home, just a month later IIRC.

Surely age fudging, that too not just by 2-3 years but good old Pakistan/Afghanistan style fudging. It's clear he fudged his age by 3-4 years coz he was done when he was 31, which's supposed to be the prime years for batsmen. 2019 onwards he has been utterly mediocre. He's the only batsman I know whose majority of the career from 2010-2014 and 2019-Now has been average or below average. That means he only had 5 good years and before then and since then he's been either average or pretty poor. At what point do we look back and say he was an average batter except for that purple patch. The longer he plays, stronger the argument. Compare it to someone like Gambhir whose entire intl career lasted from 2007-2012 (5-6 years), which is nearly the same as Kohli's blip years. You can't dismiss majority of a player's playing years to make a point. Tendulkar's rated high coz for majority of his playing years he was good. He had a down period but not at this level. In fact I don't know of a single cricketer who was extended a rope for so long - 5 years and counting. The downside is that when you bring in such players in a discussion, you can't dismiss these years coz these below-par years were the majority of the player's career.
