Pant is not in the same ballpark of Dhoni as a keeper. Dare I say even as a limited over batter. Even though outside of international T20I, Pant has a decent record.

It is as a test batter that Pant has gained supporters. His ODI and T20I efforts have over promised and under delivered.

I hope Jurel works out for us more than anyone else. We may have an all format keeper in him. I do not trust Kishan, Samson or KL Rahul as long term solution in any format as a keeper bat.

Samson is okay as a T20 keeper.

Jurel should be tried out as the ODI keeper.

Pant should be the first choice in Tests, with Jurel as back up.

Kishan is probably back up for T20 and ODI

Rishabh pant totally bottled a simple stumping. Barely any deflection. Mohit was way way outside the crease. He has to learn from the matser. :cantstop:

Watching Pant and Samson keep wickets, one has a greater appreciation of Dhoni :hatsoff:

Wicket keeping: Dhoni >>>> Pant

Batting (Tests): Pant >> Doni

Batting (White-ball): Dhoni >>>> Pant

Captaincy: Dhoni >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Pant (actually not even in the same ball park)

Pant is a better Test batter than Dhoni, especially in SENA countries. That's about it. Let's not make Pant what he isn't.

In keeping in tests, dhoni is only better in keeping against spinners. You must not have watched Dhoni struggle keeping against fast bowlers.

Dhoni was a pretty safe keeper against pacers too. Pant isn't better than Dhoni in keeping.

Dhoni is passable as a Test keeper. It is just that he wouldn't attempt catches that are half difficult and needs diving around.

Pant is miles better as a Test keeper, particularly against fast bowling.

In LOIs, Dhoni trumps Pant with stumpings

No he was not. Dhoni would not even attempt to take some of the catches or go stop byes after 2010. Pant is better than Dhoni in keeping against pacers.

none of the 4/5 wkt-keeper in Ind rotation are cut out for white-ball cricket.

it would be gr8 if sanju can keep his form in the t20 wc. but as soon as jaiswal comes in he may have to change his position in batting order.

Samson should drop to 3 with Jaiswal and Abhishek opening. Samson used to bat at 3 for RR so he should be fine with it. Else I would bring in Jitesh at 6 coz he's the only wkt keeper who can bat lower down the order and go after the bowling from ball one. None of Samson, KL, Pant, Jurel has the game to do so.

We need to pick our poison - either Samson at 3, or Jitesh at 6 (or 7). In ODIs Pant may get another chance but KL surprised many with his CT performance so he may well continue in ODIs.

After that 1 good reason jitesh has been no show, and looks like he is not intnl quality.

For Odis as soon as some1 cements their position in t20s they would be drafted in odis too. Pant is no good in white-ball be it odis or t20s,

Here are possibilities and some ques :-

  • Since opening slot is not vacant where can pant bat.
  • The only position is no.4 which is kind of sealed by Iyer.
  • Can he bat at 5/6/7 --  do not think so he would have same issue as he has in t20is where he can not hit evey-ball. He has intent but lacks game for it, he has limited to zero off-side game, his power shots mostly lacks power because he is never in power position/stance. his body falls oneway.
  • He can not be in the team if he is not keeping not a v.fast mover in the out field plus not so strong throwing arm.
  • One reason (a  hunch here) why he does not make into playing 11 is because he is kind of nervous energy, as a batter you do not want such batter on opposite end, its hard to build partnership with such unsure batter who you do not turst and plan with, say you plan single and doubles for few over without risk can a batter do that with him?? lets say batters decide to go hard can they trust him to clear boundaries or get 4/6 with lesser risk shots.

There are some with soft corner for him and may be confusing him for his batting in test specially at a crunch situations, but there is only one good situation where he can come good is when team has already lost and there is no repercussions on him if he fails, this is where he can be successful -- the ton he scored in odis.

This post is not about pant , but role and position.

Pant took  a good catch of Rizwi earlier.

The Mohit stumping was off the pads. Small deflection but it is tough to adjust so close to the ball.

That's why Dhoni hated out and out fast bowlers, to protect his fingers and hide his limitations. CSK developed trundle culture under his watch.

No way he would have managed keeping to post 2015 Indian pace attack. 2015-19 Umesh/Shami used to breathe fire, and that's not even counting Bumrah.

I have seen too many times where Dhoni would dive all over the field when donning csk colors but direct the same balls to other fielders when donning the blue. More so in the last stages of his career.

dhoni was never a v.good keeper to fast bowlers he would never try to drive around lrgside or offside, jump vertically.

this was the major reason ind could not develop good fast bowlers during that time and all were line length bowlers.

he would not miss/drop anything that comes to him but thats it will not put any effort to take a flying edge. he would just watch the ball go and run towards wkts in case some1 chases it down and throws back
