Ultimate_Game Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 (edited) You can take it in writing that when push comes to shove, and a high stakes match is in balance, India will never get a umpire's call in their favour. We've seen this happen multiple times - 2019 WC SF, 2021 WTC Final, 2023 WC Final etc. And somehow this point is always ignored and never gets the attention it deserves. That's why BCCI has to push to get umpire's call done with. Either a decision is OUT or NOT OUT irrespective of an umpire's call. The same event can't have two different outcomes depending on an umpire's whim. Make the tolerance level 20% (or 15%), i.e. say more than 15 or 20% of the ball is hitting the stump it's out else not out. Unless we do away with umpire's call we'll continue to get the wrong end of the stick. You'll also see a theme with gora umpires - they'll give us the benefit of doubt in useless ODIS or bilaterals or when the match is already done and the decision wouldn't make a difference. But when the match's in a crucial stage where the match depends on the decision, we'll invariably get the umpire's call against us. Not a new thing and has been happening for a while, and it's time BCCI calls it out and forces a change. If BCCI is as powerful as its made out to be and calls the shots, surely this is something that has to be fixed else we coming out as second best. EnterTheVoid Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 Disagree. Umpire's call is to account for the margin of error in the DRS. rollingstoned 1

If the umpire's call is not consistent and favours a few sides, the opponents will always end up with a huge disadvantage. Case in point WI against Aus in the 1st Test where literally every line decision went in favour of Aus. Umpire's call need to be consistent. Right now it's deciding the outcome of the matches. R!TTER Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 I can't say about Eng but Oz have always had the marginal calls go in their favor be it the 2015 WC, 2023 WC or anything else from recent years!
Tillu Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 (edited) Best way to deal with this is for the BCCI to create an army of Indian umpires who would also screw with the chances of Anglosphere nations in neutral matches. Edited July 13, 2025 by Tillu nevada 1

But we'll still get screwed in the knockouts. Best approach is to do away with it. Technology has come a long way since the time DRS was invented. At that time it probably made sense to have a margin of error and go with umpire's call. But not anymore when we're in the world of self-driving vehicles, and AI has taken over the world by storm. If you still want a margin of error, fine. Decide on the tolerance levels or margin of errors, say more than 15% of the ball has to hit the stumps to be OUT. But the decision needs to be consistent no matter what the original decision was. Currently, there's a huge advantage if you get umpire's call in your favour. And the team at the receiving end has a huge disadvantage. And gora teams like Aus, Eng and NZ tend to get a lot more umpire's call in their favour just like European teams get refereeing calls in their favour consistently in Hockey. Gollum 1

This margin for error call is all hogwash. Once you remove the umpires call, test cricket will become a game of LBWs and all the batting averages will plummet heavily and they don't want that. I seldom see Aus, Eng or NZ at the wrong end of an umpiring call. Generally it's Root, Williamson and Smith who get the call in their favour and the Indian batters who get a marginal LBW against them. Gollum 1

Right now, if the original decision is OUT and the ball tracking shows that just 0.001% of the ball is clipping the stump, the batter is still OUT due to umpire's call. Removing umpire's call would actually save the batter in this case. If we eliminate umpire's call and assign a fixed % of ball clipping to give the batter OUT, then batters and bowlers both will benefit equally, on average. The batter or bowler wouldn't be at the mercy of the umpire's mood/bias. Edited July 13, 2025 by BCCISelector Lord and Gollum 2

If they fix it at 30% and there would be so many balls hitting 30%-50% today that are given not out because the original umpire decision was not out. If all those start to be given out, what @Tillu is saying will happen

My point is that we can't have 0.0001% of ball clipping be given OUT, when 49.999% of ball hitting is being given NOT OUT based on an arbitrary umpire's call made in less than 2 seconds. DRS should be consistent: all <50% clipping is NOT OUT and all >50% clipping is OUT. This would actually reduce the number of LBWs since all >50% are currently being given OUT by DRS anyway. I don't mind a higher or lower % as long as it is consistently applied by ignoring the on-field umpire's 2 second opinion. Gollum and Lord 2

I always thought umpires favour the home teams with these marginal decisions until our series with NZ at home. That was blatant corruption. Whether we like it or not Umpires calls are not going away any time soon. Due to majority of umpires being from Anglo countries they collectively stand to benefit the most from it.
Ultimate_Game Posted July 14, 2025 Author Posted July 14, 2025 I don't care whether the tolerance level is 15%, 20%, 30%, 50% or some other number. The main point is not the tolerance number but that once the review is taken, the result should be the same no matter what the umpire's original call was. As an example if umpire gave it out and the result is < 50% (or the new tolerance number) of ball is hitting the stumps, it should be NOT OUT just like it would be if the umpire ruled it not out before the review. The decision should be the same irrespective of how the umpire ruled and that shouldn't factor in as part of the DRS decision. At the moment gora umpires rule nearly every crucial decision in favor of the SENA teams and we end up with game changing rulings against us. This way the result would be more inconsistent and remove umpiring bias. Gollum and Lord 2
Tillu Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 Or put the Umpiring stats out in the open so that we can name and shame these umpires into changing their corrupt behaviour.
Gollum Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 (edited) Human umpires should be gradually removed, let machines make the decisions. If you watch sports like diving/gymnastics in Olympics, the decisions are so random but always favor some teams like USA and European ones over the Russians and Asians, you must watch the mental gymnastics at play there by commentators as well. Dipa Karmakar successfully did the Produnova which is so dangerous that even Simon Biles has never attempted it......commentators all praised her for pulling off such a risky routine and thought she would medal, but somehow the all gora jury placed her 4th, a whisker away from medal.....some Swiss girl won bronze for a basic routine. Simone who won gold in that event praised Dipa so much and said she would never have attempted it....and she hasn't even till now. Western nations always look out for themselves and even in umpiring, run a cartel like system. Visible in cricket as well where they are threatened by BCCI, India's rise, and decadence of erstwhile imperial overlords. About time BCCI takes this seriously, I fear all cricket related decisions in ICC boardroom have Eng/Aus stamp. Or risk a hockey like situation where GOAT teams India and Pakistan were brought down by systematic biased umpiring, apart from change in rules and playing conditions. Check how West Germans beat Pak in 1972 Munich gold medal match....there was a riot in the stadium due to umpiring by the goras. Edited July 14, 2025 by Gollum
