Like when you are insisting on bowling even when you are sucking wind because you are trying to get a 5th? Yeah, I can see that. But, in that case, the captain can say "effit" and hand the ball to another guy.

 

But with century-chasing, it's all you. Unless of course Dravid is the captain and goes "eff your 200, we're done here!"

Wonder if milestone celebrations should be stopped. Treat getting to a 50 or 100 just like any other score

Quitting at 99 centuries would have put him in exalted status similar to Bradman's 99.94 average. But no, he had to sink the team to get to the 100th! And remember that it was not just this game that was lost. For several months, talk of the 100th hundred was like a millstone around the team's neck, something the team would have done much better without.

I don't think you can stop players from celebrating. But some maverick player should intentionally not care to celebrate, and this might get people thinking.

It is not celebrating purely. It is also acknowledging the crowd reaction to centuries. Generally they clap. No big deal. Pant doesn't care about 100. But he did celebrate in style

Its due to inclusion in stats which becomes criteria for judging players. No one asks how many 90s a player has scored though it has similar effect

Cricket as sports has a legacy of being not result oriented , it started as a sport where team would play for draws, only recently draws are not seen as favourable result.

 

Hence the win/loss does never mattered , it was who did what, who scored , who took wkts. There was hardly any concept of playing for the team playing to win.

And if once teams like Aus or Aus cricketing system started taking results seriously they changed the game and mind set. Aus player always kept their team 1st winning was what mattered the most.

 

And team like Ind and eng who would not win most of the times (specially when cricket started televised in 90s ) they started focusing on personal milestones, score a useless 100 or a 50 say you showed the guts that was it.

 

It was evident in this IPL too Stablished Ind player were celebrating a losing/near losing 100s like they have archived something big its just IPl  and even then they are not playing any better than a newbie who are not celebrating a milestone like crazy.

 

The objective is not to win but to have some kind of small personal milestone.

Dravid did it for his own attention and power play, not out of any altruism. People are pretty naive.

Who in the current team have this mentality? Rahul, who is still from old school. And perhaps Gill? Jadeja?

 

Two of them will be gone soon. Jaiswal, pant, etc don't have this mentality

prior to that series in the scG test  Dravid had an opportunity to score a century in the 2nd innings. But India needed to bowl some overs in 4th evening. Roughly 4 overs. Dada declared 211/2 with Dravid on 91.  Dravid was the hero in the previous test win.

According to Sachin Ganguly came and apologized to him and said he wasn't informed (and Wright said the same).

Let us put this way. Even if he had scored 200 that would not have been remembered as much : It will become a folklore. In 2080 someone will be saying "INdian team management hatched a plan to insult Sachin"

Dravid was going through peak form at that time having won Adelaide Test few months back and scoring runs himself. Strange to say he craved attention at that time. There was plenty of attention on him at that time
