Milestone Mentality

We deny singles to get to centuries. We forcefully use a bowler even when he is done and dusted so that he gets to fifer.  We take risky runs to get to 100. Getting on the honors board became more important at Lords. Kohli atleast 2 or 3 occasions in the WC2023 denied runs to get to his 100. Then Kela was looking dejected for hitting a six because it didn't give him an extra ball to get to 100.  Guys like Gavaskar just treat it as a crime if someone gets out at in the 80s,90s.  Not all selfish acts are bad as longer you bat is better for team. But these side effects really  cause us lose focus on the main objective. When will this mentality change? Been there for ages. I remember Srinath bowling wides so that Kumble could get 10 wickets.

It's part of the cricketing fabric. Everyone - Ozzie to Indian to Zimbabwean - exults like a maniac (not *the* @maniac) when they reach centuries. But it does seem a bit more exaggerated with the Indian team.

Hero worship in this country is a bane. Be it politicians, celebs or cricketers. 

 

A cricketer's worth is measured in terms of number of centuries, for an actor how many 500 crore grossers never mind even if they were awful movies, well for a politician, all sorts of garbage reasons. 

 

In no other country is it as pronounced as in India, only we can make Gods and temples out of actors and cricketers, do milk abhishekams of their posters, people even take their lives if there is some bad news about their idol.

True. Lalchand Rajput, Bharat Arun, TA Sekhar, Chandrakant Pandit have far better coaching creds than our star coaches.

Gill is another one who looks like a player who care for milestones.

 

Siraj is also 5fer obsessive.

Tendulkar's 100th 100 ironically is an example of how milestone obsession can cost you games. We never learn.

remember the disappointment when kl won a game with a 4 instead of a six he needed for a ton, something like that.

 

i dont blame them, they just mirror society and media. it's not an indian thing

 

the one notable stand out was sehwag who made a point of hitting a boundary to get to a landmark

Not entirely an Indian thing but we take it more seriously than others. 

 

Last year in the Christchurch test, Cummins hit a 4 to win the match leaving Carey stranded on 98, they just laughed about it.

I feel differently about a test-match 5-fer than a century. I am trying to figure out why. 

 

It's like, in my mind, trying aggressively to get the 5th wkt aligns well with the team's goals of getting the opponent all out asap

 

Unlike all the slowing down, not rotating strike, doing stupid stuff trying to get those last 10 runs without getting out, endangering your batting partner's wicket etc etc

 

In what way does 5-fer chasing adversely affect the team?

Overbowling thereby affecting future performance. Possibly Akashdeep suffered from it.
