rangeelaraja Posted July 18, 2025 Posted July 18, 2025 I have been a Macbook user at work for 12 years now. Took a month or so to fully adjust and feel like there is no looking back. Corporate provided Macbooks are always heavy duty - always the Macbook pro, always 24 GB atleast. The first personal use Macbook I bought was the 2017 Macbook Air ( running on the Intel chip before the M-series ). I bought an Apple certified refurbished version because it was $200 off ( total cost $ 840 including tax ) and had warranty and everything else ( including packaging just like new). The refurbished 2017 Macbook Air is still running well - slower for user. But in great condition, after 8.5 years. This is insane. Unheard of as a former windows PC user. Encouraged by this ---I bought a refurbished 15 inch M4, 2025 Macbook Air, 24 GB RAM. It is "only" $1359 , and $240 cheaper than the "brand new" version. 3 months into using this - I have to say - this is easily, by far, the best personal computer I have ever owned. The M series chips are just too good. My experience with Macbooks - always go for certified refurbished - it is actually brand new - and its an easy $ 240-300 haircut for the exact same Apple warranty. Does anyone have a different experience ?

kepler37b Posted July 20, 2025 Posted July 20, 2025 The best value for money is an old style assembled desktop PC. It comes at fraction of cost, is almost infinitely upgradable for 5 years. For me laptop looks like a consumerist rather than utilitarian. It is ergonomically quite poor, is not upgradeable and will have heating issues due to the compact size. The only advantage is mobility. But the disadvantages outweigh the advantages
