That was the time most of the scores used to be in 150-170 range and that suited Kohli's game to a T. It's no coincidence that Kohli's 2 best knocks came while chasing 150 odd against Aus in 2016 and 159 against Pak in 2022. When the target was higher - say over 175, Kohli struggled. Think prime Kohli was good for 180+ totals, even batting first he scored 90 at 200 SR in 2016 SF. But as you rightly said, his USP was acing sub 170 chases on tacky surfaces. Apart from the 2 knocks you mentioned, there was his runchase against RSA in 2014 WT20 SF, in Mirpur. Rahane and Yuvi almost destroyed that chase as well, and they sunk our chances in the final...while Dhoni kept red hot Raina in dugout. Edited September 20, 2025 by Gollum

In 2016-19 period he was a devastating T20 bat, both in IPL and internationals, pity he didn't play a WC in his best years while Rahane opened for us in two. No matter how much KL irritates us with his phattuness, can't play down his shotmaking abilities. Gill is a steady eddy 150 SR guy on his best days, and a liability on tacky surfaces unlike Kohli. Has done absolutely nothing in this format. I had no problem with replacing Samson as opener , provided it was a superior option like Jaiswal. Here is an underlying stat about Gill Since IPL 2022, against 140 + kph deliveries Fuller than 8 m length Gill - 74 runs, 12.3/113.9(Avg /SR) Sai - 70 runs, 35/140 Shorter than 8m length Gill - 29 runs, 29/103.6 Sai - 55 runs, inf/148.7 In this format, he neither has the game against high pace nor against elite spin bowling. If we needed another dasher, we should've picked Jaiswal. If we wanted a slightly more anchor type batsman , Sai was a better option against high pace and spin In modern day t20 cricket, donot have to look for data for a t20 batter just check what are their 6 hitting shots and how many of them they have. Most teams right now looking to out score the opposition, 220 is minimum they are looking for right now, if they get 220-225 kind of target they are looking that to chase by 19th over. Game has moved on from the anchor role, not sure what happens in future but this is how it is, teams expect one of top 4 batter be able to anchor if needed and play out 10-12 quite balls and they again set the team back to course to 200+ , Eng hit 300 yes it was one off but it was top 2 test playing teams with decent to good bowling line up. Think Aus vs SA t20i was a big scoring too on those big grounds. Now coming back to gill he has 2 6-hitting shots against spin its sweep and vs pace its flick of the legs. Thats is not much the other thing is his nature his nature is self preservation first ,so he is not going to play or take risks this is not a good combination. this is KL, Rituraj, Kolhi and Rohit kind of batting teams have moved on from that and apart from may be rutu rest 3 have more shots than gill. Mentioned this previously as well there are 3 ways to be good t20 batter: Be a power hitter and able to make good contact with the ball V.good at field manipulation using those modern shots -- Lap, reverse, ramps etc, and use of the crease. Have a v.fast bat swing with good contact. Having 2 of the above mentioned 3 quality can make some1 a good t20 batter. A batter should be able to hit 6s from the crease. Right now Gill has none, IIRC the ton he got in t20i - he only hit his 1st six after completing his 50 (or there may have be just 1-2 six before he got to 50). Ruturaj ton was a match losing ton even though it was top score by an Ind batter before Abhishek's ton vs eng. And during that ton rutu was scoring slowly and playing for himself and only once he got to 70 something ans it was last few overs he got his ton. As a batter its a good day if they get to play 20-25 balls what is their output on those balls should be questioned not just raw numbers Edited September 20, 2025 by tapandrun Lord 1

Nobody's asking for Abhishek in Tests. That would be equally poor decision as Gill in T20s. There're 3 formats which are all different and requires different skill sets. And there're very few players who can play all 3. In India Jaiswal is the only batter who checks the box and unfortunately he's not the golden boy of Indian cricket. Bumrah and Jaiswal are the only 2 all-format players we have. And in shorter formats Pandya, Axar and Varun C are the other key players, and Pandya especially is the MVP. He's the one who lends balance to our short format teams and without him we're not contenders. Nikhil_cric and Manucrick 2

vvvslaxman Posted September 21, 2025 Posted September 21, 2025 Ahead of India vs Pakistan clash, AbhishekSharma turns mentor for friend Shubman Gill Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharmahave been inseparable during the Asia Cup. They get off the bustogether, share the same nets, train side by side, and walk backtogether after practice.True to their nature, Gill keeps a straight face while Abhishekteases his friend whenever a fan asks India’s vice-captain for anautograph. "Aapko prince ke saath photo leni hai (You want toclick a photo with the prince)," he joked when a fan asked for apicture last week at the ICC Cricket Academy in Dubai. For two cricketers who have opened together since their U-12days, they have come a long way. The duo are now designated openers for Team India in this Asia Cup. Abhishekhas provided India with lightning starts in all three league matches, scoring 99 runs at a blistering strike rate of225. Gill, on the other hand, has managed only 35 runs in three group matches. True friends are those who stand by your side when the going gets tough. On Saturday at the ICC CricketAcademy in Dubai, a day before the highly anticipated clash, Abhishek -- like a true friend -- turned mentor for Shubman. Only three Indian players -- Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy -- turned up forthe optional nets with the support staff led by coach Gautam Gambhir.Gill batted for an hour and a half, first tested by Abhishek’s left-arm spin. Abhishek suggested Gill to try theinside-out lofted shot over extra cover. Gill attempted sweeps and switch-hits, but with little success against Abhishek’s flat deliveries. Abhishek then specifically asked side-arm thrower Nuwan Seneviratne to bowl at off and middle stumps tosharpen Gill’s responses. He even roped in Varun Chakravarthy, who was experimenting in an empty net, to test Gill’s temperament. Chakravarthy repeatedly challenged India’s vice-captain, especially when Gill tried to chargedown the pitch. An hour later, Abhishek padded up and started hammering the net bowlers with ease. Meanwhile, Gill sat withbatting coach Sitanshu Kotak, who kept offering inputs. After a while, Abhishek -- fresh from tonking the bowlers-- joined the conversation. The duo then diligently packed their gear and left the venue together. For India to thrive against Pakistan, they will need Gill’s class and Abhishek’s firepower. If Saturday’s nets wereanything to go by, the duo’s friendship might just blossom into the partnership India needs the most underDubai's ring of fire.
vvvslaxman Posted September 21, 2025 Posted September 21, 2025 When you read how poor Gill against spinners even in the nets i have to say India must take the bold call. He can always go back home and sharpen his skills. You can't do this during the middle of the tournament. rollingstoned, Gollum, Manucrick and 1 other 4
