What's the point of Gill in T20s???

He hasn't done anything of note, disappears against better teams and his stats are inflated against weaker teams and minnows. He neither gives you solidity nor a quick start at the top. Likes of Jaiswal, Priyansh Arya or Ayush Mhatre are much better options at the top to pair with Abhishek as they can take advantage of PP overs and play the modern T20 game.

Gill is a ODI and Test batter and not cut out for T20s. If we lose Abhishek early we'll struggle as Gill isn't going to cover for Abhishek and give us a quick start. Hope some sense prevails after the Asia Cup and Gill is dropped from the T20 team.

I think the logic is they needed a right-hander to open with Abhishek to maintain the left-right combination.

Samson has been woeful throughout this year. After seeing Samson's knock today and how badly he struggled against England, it's understandable why he has been removed from the opening spot.

Gill has been in great form across formats over the past 6-7 months, so he was a natural choice. Who are the other right-handed openers? Gaikwad and KL. Can't think of anyone else. Mhatre is too young.

The sensible option is to ignore the left-right combination and pick Jaiswal who was ahead in the pecking order.

Samson is keeping too. Gill destroys the balance

We need a keeper opener. If not Samson, then Porel or Prabhsimran. But Samson is doing fine.

Want Jaiswal to focus on Tests as of now. Also then we can play Parag ahead of Jitesh in MO

I prefer Jitesh over Samson in the middle order. Jitesh can also fill the vacant finisher spot which was previously occupied by Rinku. Dube isn't a finisher and Axar is more of a floater. So we're missing a proper finisher currently.

The larger issue or debate is how do t20i teams want to set-up themselves.

After the initial few years of t20i where bits and pieces players (in terms of that era and compared to batter like kallis, sachin, etc )who were taking this as a fun format would come and try to maximize what ever balls play- sort of pak team of now. try to have as many players who can be called allrounders.

Then suddenly with IPL Aus players found a way to score big runs may be a ton here/there, the idea was to bat 50+ balls and try getting a ton and hence the anchor player came into all the sides.

Now the big teams starting to understand the game bit more they are moving away from a dedicated anchor or accumulator role,Do no think any SENA team has an anchor now.

Ind has taken a step back with Gill, lets take who is a role-model or the top guy Ind is hoping he can emulate to. Those top guys were rohit and kolhi. So Ind is not moving away from rohit and kolhi they just getting a new and unproven version of them.

Any top order batter playing 44-55 balls will score something in similar range 85-115 (excluding 1-2 very fast players), so now ind should ask playing 44-55 balls on regular basis is not a possibility so facing 20-25 balls who has better chances of scoring more runs, have not checked data on this but Sanju/Jaiswal would be better than Gill.

Yes this was an odd day but if Abhishek would have been slow too Ind would have not scored 60 runs in pp, 60 + runs in pp is common these days even teams considered slow also score 50-55.

Today sanju played a bad knock plus Ind had just 1-2 boundary in 1st 12 balls, there is an opener whose first thought is self preservation how would they maximize the pp. it would create more pressure on other partner to sore more boundaries or score quickly.

There are defsincy in gill t20 game he does not have power, he can not hit 6s from the crease he needs to use his feet spinners will exploit that ,he plays sweep but do not think he plays sweep right away also vs pace his 6 option is flicking to the leg-side if ball if drifted that way.

What are his 6 hitting options??

If Ind needs this kind of role or a player just hang on to either Kolhi or Rohit. They have done it multiple  times and they are proven

Also, Samson scored 2 rapid tons in South Africa + keeper.   Gill is a specialist stats padder.   Has done absolutely nothing in this format.

I had no problem with replacing Samson as opener , provided it was a superior option like Jaiswal.

Here is an underlying stat about Gill

Since IPL 2022, against 140 + kph deliveries

Fuller than 8 m length

Gill  - 74 runs,  12.3/113.9(Avg /SR)

Sai - 70 runs, 35/140

Shorter than 8m length

Gill - 29 runs,  29/103.6

Sai - 55 runs,  inf/148.7

In this format, he neither has the game against high pace nor against elite spin bowling.

If we needed another dasher, we should've picked Jaiswal.

If we wanted a slightly more anchor type batsman , Sai was a better option against high pace and spin

Gill is simply playing coz BCCI is too think minded to move away from their habit of creating superstars.

Reality is, no matter how much capable and versatile one is. The demands for all 3 formats are vast and its extremely tough for a player to do it consistently across formats for a sustainable amount of time.

What is worse is he has been made VC, hence undroppable....not like he has secondary skills like keeping or bowling. He might still do well in these low quality matches and useless bilaterals, but there are better options for T20 WC. We should easily win the home WC if we play our best XI but now everyone has to shift position to accomodate the golden boy, and too much pressure on Abhishek, SKY, Tilak. Gill is the kind of guy who can pay homage to Rahane's 40(36) in a WC SF/F against SENA, as such he has a terrible record in big games across formats (WTC F, CT, WC).

BCCI and its obsession with all format stars, marketability. GG too is a hypocrite, and Agarkar not up to the task.

Won't be surprised he's the captain in WT20. Hasn't captained well in IPL. Meanwhile Iyer is nowhere in the picture

And GG acts like a saint, when he has such strong likes/dislikes, bias.

He's a hypocrite as proven by his stand on Pak. Just tries to sell deshbhakti ka chooran.
