He has to have a break through season. He steps up whenever team is in trouble. But you have to do somethign special to stand out especially winning cause. If your knocks come in losing and drawn matches nobody will pay attention.

What if a bits-and-pieces' players bit is better than the bit of a bits-only player? Should he be punished because he also brings a piece with him?

 

E.g.,

Putrevus can bat and bowl.

Backtocricaddict can only bat.

But Putrevus' batting >>>>>Backtocricaddict's batting.

Should they pick Backtocricaddict because the only thing he can do is kinda bat and is therefore a "specialist"?

No, but do you see those bits and pieces players whose batting is better than regular batsman alone.

Don't see it. Guys like Sai Sudarshan and Paddikal are making the team as specialist bat with 40 FC average.

Problem is selections not the talent in this case. Rinku is better than both, so is Sarfraz.

I would contend that Sundar >> Padikkal as a test bat. Perhaps on par or better than Sai S.

India needs to hire some professionals to come up with analysis of quality of these knocks. Scoring 100s on roads whee more than 3 or 4 guys score 100s should not have same weightage as someone producing a back to the wall performance. Also quality of attack, surface quality have to be factored in. Otherwise we just go by raw numbers hoping they would repliacte at the highest level.
